Applications are invited to apply for a Trust Doctor (ST1/2) post in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.The full time post is available from August 2024 for a period of 6 months and will be based at Leeds General Infirmary.Leeds Teaching Hospitals is the second largest Major Trauma Centre in the UK, based at Leeds General Infirmary.We can offer you frequent exposure to polytrauma & orthopaedic surgery aligned with excellent training opportunities. You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor to help guide your career aspirations, and to maximise educational opportunities you have the opportunity to access medical expertise in a wide variety of disciplines.Main duties of the jobThe successful post holder will work with a team of surgeons to provide inpatient care for both trauma & elective patients. Excellent training opportunities are available in clinic and theatre, as well as exposure to acute trauma. Job responsibilitiesThe Trauma & Related Services department at Leeds General Infirmary is internationally renowned for treatment and research and offers the highest levels of service, and access to world class treatment in Trauma & Orthopaedics, Plastic and reconstructive surgery and rheumatology. It is also home to the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (LMBRU).The substantive post holder will work solely at Leeds General Infirmary for both daytime and out of hours work.Whilst working out of hours you will work with three other tiers of junior staff to provide the acute trauma service.You will be the first contact for the Emergency Department referrals and the admissions unit. You will also be required to support the Foundation Year doctors in the management of inpatients.Excellent training opportunities are available in clinic and theatre as well as a vast exposure to acute trauma.There will be research opportunities within the job plan for those wishing to pursue it.The trauma service is based in the Leeds General Infirmary, providing specialist services such as spinal injuries, open fractures, post injury limb reconstruction and complex fracture work.The Trauma service has four dedicated wards plus one paediatric ward including two paediatric HDU beds, a six bedded HDU shared with plastic surgery, and two spinal wards shared with Neurosurgery. There are three dedicated trauma theatres providing a 24 hr seven day service, one dedicated spine and reconstructive trauma theatre, and three dedicated paediatric orthopaedic theatre sessions per week in addition to paediatric trauma lists.There is also a dedicated orthopaedic outpatient and fracture clinic with supporting radiology facilities.General elective orthopaedic services are provided from two sites in Leeds with Hand surgery, spine surgery and paediatric orthopaedic provided at Leeds General Infirmary.The remainder of adult elective orthopaedic care is provided at Chapel Allerton Hospital in a dedicated facility which was designed to provide excellent, comprehensive and rapid recovery services for complex and revision lower limb, upper limb and foot and ankle surgeryMEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENTTrauma and Orthopaedic department of surgery is a large unit contributing to both service delivery and academic research. There are 30 Consultants including a Professor of Trauma surgery and all main branches of Trauma and Orthopaedics Surgery are represented. The department consists of:32 substantive Consultants & Locums9 ST6+ level9 ST3 level1 National Spine Fellow & 1 National Hand Fellow7 Clinical/Research Fellows/(Trust Doctors)2 CT1/2 level Deanery posts / 5 Trust posts4 FY2 Doctors8 FY1 DoctorsPerson Specification
Experience
Essential

  • GMC registration with licence to practice
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • 4 Months Orthopaedic experience at FY or CT or equivalent
  • Experience of UK Healthcare system
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

  • 6 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards
