The post holder is primarily intended to work at Registrar level, supporting and aiding the clinical ward work, the Outpatient workload and Emergency and Emergency Elective operating of the Department. A pay banding supplement is payable for participation in the on-call rota at middle grade level.The post holder will have a 12 month post (extendable) in the General Surgery department which will include supporting the Foundation School trainees and the opportunity to train in General Surgery. In addition she/he will be involved in Out Patient Clinics and in-patient operating lists. The post includes a 1:8 on-call commitment. He/she will be expected to be involved in several research projects and actively participate in teaching and audit.Main duties of the jobNewham University Hospital is part of Barts Health NHS Trust. It is an associate teaching hospital and is dedicated to teaching and training. Post-holders will be working at the middle grade level as a Trust Grade Registrar and be part of a team of 8 at the middle grade level within the General Surgery department.You will be rotating and working within the department in Breast/Endocrine surgery, Gastro-intestinal/minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery. Job responsibilitiesYou will be part of a 1 in 8 on call rota and you will have to work within the EWTD frame. Two of the 8 middle grades are floating to cover the 6 firms on a rotation basis within the department. There will be opportunities to be involved in more major colorectal work with Mr Patel (Royal London Hospital) and Mr Engledow (Whipps Cross Hospital)There will be exposure to a wide range of general surgical emergency work. Surgically led endoscopy lists run throughout the week. There are 6 surgical firms which are paired by speciality in order for the consultants to cover each other: Mr F. Mihaimeed, General Surgery, Breast and Endocrine Surgery Mr J. Saunders, General Surgery and Breast Surgery Mr A. Sinha, General Surgery, Day case and minimally invasive Surgery Mr R. Le Fur, General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery Mr H. Patel, General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery Mr A. Engledow, General Surgery, Emergency Surgery and Colorectal Surgery Mr A Ramsanahie, General and Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery Ms A. Garg, Emergency and Elective General Surgery, interest in Colorectal SurgeryClinical Governance & AuditThere is a robust clinical governance program with a monthly morbidity and mortality meeting in general surgery. The post-holders are also expected to partake in at least one audit project related to either general surgery, relevant subspecialty or any appropriate . There is excellent support for this through the audit unit and the consultant body. This should be aimed towards national or international presentation.Study, Training and TeachingAppointees will be expected to have completed foundation year training and have passed the MRCS (or equivalent) examination, or to have at least completed the training requirements for the same. These posts DO NOT carry Deanery accreditation for the purposes of Surgical Training, though it is expected that they will provide training that will be of value to trainee surgeons.ResearchExtensive research facilities exist at Barts Health NHS Trust and research will be actively encouraged within the department and in conjunction with other departments of the hospitals where there is a wide range of research activity. There is ample time on the rota for fellows to complete a significant research project during the appointment.Salary and conditions of ServiceYour salary will be at the appropriate point on the ST scale, in keeping with your experience and your work intensity. The post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical & Dental Staff (England & Wales), to the General Whitley Council Conditions of Service and also to the National Health Service Pension Regulations. You may be required to provide on-call cover and take for patients throughout Barts Health NHS Trust, including cross district, inter-directorate, and Barts Health NHS Trust reserves the right to change cover requirements in accordance with the needs of the service.
