Job Description:Grade UE07: £39,347 to £46,974 per annumDiscipline of Mechanical Engineering / School of Engineering / College of Science & EngineeringFull-time: 35 hours per weekFixed-term: For 12 monthsThe Opportunity:We are looking for a highly qualified individual to join the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, with experience in delivery of teaching in biomedical engineering, in connection with mechanical engineering.The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and support for undergraduate BEng/MEng and postgraduate MSc taught programmes. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and support for undergraduate BEng/MEng and postgraduate MSc taught programmes.The successful candidate will be expected to teach on courses ‘Living Materials and their Biomaterial Replacements 4/MSc’ and ‘Design of Surgical Tools and Implanted Medical Devices 4/MSc’. Topics to be covered include: the cardiovascular system, vascular grafts, keyhole surgery, catheters, heart valves, stents, dialysis, regulations for biomedical devices and biomaterials, biocompatibility, sterilisation, viscoelastic properties of tissues, blood modelling, bioprinting, dialysis, artificial livers/kidneys and tissue engineering. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise project students.This position is full-time and fixed-term for 12 months.Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A PhD and first degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related subject
  • Knowledge of relevant concepts in biomedical engineering (as indicated by the list of topics above)
  • Knowledge of teaching and assessment methods relevant to the courses named above
  • Excellent communication, presentation and organisational skills.

In 2002, the present School of Engineering was formed from the previously existing departments of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. In REF 2021 the joint submission from the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University to General Engineering was ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK for quality and breadth of research.
