Position: Unpaid Youth Education Intern
Reports to: Youth Education Supervisor
Position Term: ASAP – June 28, 2024
Hours: Minimum 15 hours per week; preference to candidates seeking more hours
Background:
Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City. The Education and Learning Program provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.
Scope of Work:
The Youth Education Intern will be able to experience the breadth of IRC’s Youth Education Department in supporting education programs for newly arrived youth including Tutoring, Leaders in Training, Community Events, the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA), and our newest virtual program – Youth ESOL. Specifically, the Youth Education Intern will be working with the Youth Education Supervisor in overseeing those programs, including but not limited to data processing, creating M&E reports, and program strategy. The intern will also be providing curriculum and logistical support to the Youth ESOL instructor.
This is a part-time hybrid position, requiring flexibility to come into our offices in midtown Manhattan during weekdays and some Saturdays as required.

Essential Job Functions:
- Operationalize and monitor facilitation of virtual Youth ESOL program. Tasks can include:
- assisting with recruitment, intake, and enrollment paperwork for students
- taking attendance
- conducting assessments
- input data in IRC systems
- communicating with students and parents
- researching ESOL resources
- supporting in lesson planning and curriculum development
- other related duties as assigned.
- Support the Youth Education Supervisor. Tasks can include:
- working with Youth Education specialists across programs
- compiling data to create M&E reports for programs across the department
- planning curricula and schedule for NYSA
- researching new opportunities for program expansion
- other related duties as assigned.
Learning Objectives:
- Intern will learn how to plan for and manage large-scale interdependent educational program for youth.
- Intern will learn how to manage monitoring and evaluation for complex educational programs for youth.
- Intern will learn about inter- and intra-departmental coordination processes across the IRC.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Clear IRC background check by deadline in order to work with minors and/or vulnerable populations
- Current graduate student or recent graduate student in education or related field
- Demonstrated experience working with refugee or immigrant students and families, excellent rapport with youth and adults of diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to work independently on projects with minimal supervision
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English required
- Fluency in a second language preferred (such as: Spanish, French, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Fulani,
- Wolof, Mandingo, Haitian Creole, Nepali, Tibetan, Tagalog, Tigrinya, Bengal)
- Fluent in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word
- Strong desire to learn
