Project description:
Low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is used clinically in bone fracture clinics to promote wound healing and has been shown experimentally to promote cell migration with potential for wound healing.
We are interested in measuring the effects of LIPUS on wound healing in the oral cavity and initial steps towards developing a wearable LIPUS device. This exciting interdisciplinary project will involve bioengineering, mechanical engineering, cell and tissue culture and molecular biology.
The PhD student will have a chance to work in tissue engineering labs creating 3D models of human oral mucosa, molecular biology labs to deduce specific cell signalling pathways instigated by ultrasound treatment, and in engineering labs to build a bespoke, tunable ultrasound rig.
