Job Summary This is a weekday overnight position at Auburn Veterinary Specialists in Gulf Shores, AL. Typical shifts are 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
The Veterinary Technician position performs a variety of tasks related to the care and treatment of animal patients. This position assists in the monitoring and treatment of all patients admitted to the hospital.
Auburn Veterinary Specialists – Gulf Shores is the centerpiece of a 24,000-square-foot Auburn University Educational Complex in Gulf Shores, Alabama, providing specialty veterinary service and educational opportunities for students interested in internal medicine and surgery. As a part of the Auburn Educational Complex, the center is a satellite of the Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine . The center operates as a referral-only facility offering surgery services, internal medicine and dermatology, with the intent to add emergency services in the future.

Essential Functions
  • Organizes, cleans, stocks, and prepares treatment rooms for examination of animals, and holds or restrains animals during examination, treatment, or inoculation.
  • Administers injections, anesthesia, serums, vaccines, and treatments to animals, including tasks such as dressing wounds, cleaning teeth, and taking vital signs of animals under the direction of a veterinarian.
  • Performs laboratory tests to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.
  • Cares for and monitors the condition of animals before, during, and/or after surgery.
  • Collects, prepares, and labels samples for laboratory testing and assists with research projects.
  • Performs emergency first aid, such as emergency resuscitation or other life saving procedures.
  • Assists with student instruction programs through preparation of materials, observing, monitoring and/or grading tasks, and presenting orientation and procedures briefings.
  • May triage phone calls from referring veterinarians/clients as well as schedule appointments for diagnostic procedures under the direction of a veterinarian
  • May fill prescriptions, measure medications, and label containers.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:
Level I: Requires an Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification.
Level II: Requires an Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification plus 2 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the care and comfort of animals.
Level III: Requires an Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification plus 4 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the care and comfort of animals.
Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Minimum License and Certifications Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment
