Memorial University is seeking a Vice-President (Marine Institute) to lead its operations, drive transformational change, collaboratively develop and implement a clear vision, and strengthen its reputation as a global leader in marine education, research and industry engagement. With oceans intrinsic to the culture and economic heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Marine Institute is integrally linked to the province’s marine and maritime identity. It is critical that it continues to play a leadership role in applied oceans education, research, and training.

ABOUT MARINE INSTITUTE

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (Marine Institute) – a campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland – is one of the world’s most respected centres for marine learning and applied research. The Marine Institute enjoys an outstanding reputation in Canada, across North America, and internationally, as a comprehensive institution for education, training, research, and industrial support for the ocean industries. The Marine Institute is home to over 375 researchers, faculty members, and staff, over 1,100 students in Certificate Diploma, Bachelor, Masters and PhD programs, and over 5,200 learners enrolled annually in community based and industrial response training courses. The Marine Institute provides more than 30 industry-driven programs through its three Schools: The School of Fisheries; the School of Maritime Studies; and the School of Ocean Technology. The Schools include specialized centres and units that lead the Institute, both nationally and internationally, in applied research and technology transfer and in the provision of training to a variety of industry clients. THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting directly to the President of Memorial University and working in collaboration and consultation with the Marine Institute’s Executive Committee and Industry Advisory Committee, other Vice-Presidents and the University’s senior leadership team, the Vice-President (Marine Institute) will provide strategic oversight and manage the Institute’s resources and fundraising capabilities, promote pedagogical excellence, and advance its research and local and international profile.

Working within a unionized environment, the Vice-President (Marine Institute) will nurture relationships with internal and external parties to support the Institute’s mission, foster an open and inclusive work environment, and strategically position the Marine Institute as a leader in the future ocean economy. They will guide a collegial academic and research planning process that sets clear priorities for investment in academic programs and research initiatives that leverage the Institute’s unique strengths and enhance its global relevance while navigating its dual role as an industry- and research-focused institution. They will also play a key role in advancing the Institute’s commitment to Indigenization and equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism (EDI-AR), ensuring that these principles are integrated into all aspects of its operations, from academic programming and research to community engagement and industry partnerships. The Vice-President (Marine Institute) will champion student success by ensuring that resources and support services align with educational and training objectives and support graduate success, while driving research innovation in the critical fields of green energy, the blue economy, ocean technology and marine sustainability. In recognizing the financial realities facing the Institute, they will help balance the financial and operational pressures, managing the allocation of resources within a complex budgetary environment, while addressing key infrastructure and technology requirements. The Vice-President will be committed to enhancing Marine Institute’s critical role in Newfoundland and Labrador’s economic and cultural landscape.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

You will bring demonstrated academic leadership and research experience together with an appreciation of the range of scholarship and research activity found within the Marine Institute and its multidimensional nature. Significant senior leadership experience is required, including superior financial, organizational, and analytical skills and the ability to balance consultation with sound decision-making. You bring a collegial and collaborative style, and as an effective team-builder, you have an ability to unite, inspire and create new and innovative opportunities for collaboration across a diverse group of faculty, researchers, staff, and students. You are a relationship builder with a professional network that spans the global ocean industry. Your industry knowledge, includes an understanding of regulatory bodies, environmental policies, and maritime law, and you appreciate Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich history and cultural and economic landscape. You bring an enthusiasm for leading the Marine Institute to realize its opportunities and achieve its full potential in maritime-related research, training and education in marine and ocean sciences. As a visionary and innovative leader, you are an excellent communicator and motivator who is capable of strategic planning and execution, driving transformative change, and fostering a collaborative environment that promotes excellence in research, education, and industry training. Your leadership will be defined by a deep commitment to advancing the principles of Indigenization, equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism in leadership, education, and scholarship, while promoting an inclusive and accessible culture at the Marine Institute. As the ideal candidate, you will hold an earned doctorate or Ph.D., preferably in a research-based marine or maritime-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and maritime industry experience.
