Vice President of Development

Position description

The Vice President for Development will lead Wesley Theological Seminary’s development program within a lively and spirited academic and church community. Wesley’s fundraising program encompasses annual operating support, capital gifts, and planned giving. Alumni relations are also part of the office’s responsibilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Fundraising

  • support and partner with the President and Board members on all fundraising initiatives.
  • provide leadership for the Development Office.
  • actively manage a portfolio of principal and major gift prospects, developing and overseeing the implementation of individual strategies to identify, cultivate, and solicit gifts and grants.
  • be available to meet personally with donors, prospective donors, and pastors at times and places convenient for them, including evenings and weekends.
  • work closely with the leadership of the Lewis Center, the Luce Center, the Community Engagement Institute, the Center for Public Theology, and the Vice President for International Relations to identify, cultivate, and solicit development prospects for these special funding opportunities.
  • maintain cooperative working relationships with academic and church leaders, members of the administration, and others whose cooperation is essential to effective outreach and fundraising; establish fundraising objectives with the President, senior staff, and the Board.
  • As appropriate, serve as the staff representative on the Board Development Committee and other committees.
  • coordinate with the President’s Office on special events for governors, major donors, and prospects.

Departmental Management

  • build a team to execute a high-performing fundraising program to meet the fundraising objectives, including the annual fund, capital gifts, and foundation grants.
  • provide leadership, staff development and motivation, direction, and supervision of the Development Office, establishing measurable objectives and strategies to achieve them;
  • serve as a member of the Administrative Council;

Qualifications

  • fundraising experience in a church setting or religious academic institutions.
  • experience leading staff and volunteers.
  • ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • ability to work and communicate effectively in both congregational and secular environments valuing diversity and inclusion.
  • strong written and oral communication skills.
