Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Bangkok is a large diplomatic mission of around 150 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives including on prosperity, trade, security, open societies, consular services and law enforcement. This is an exciting opportunity to join our diverse team.  
 
You will join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Thailand team which promotes exports to Thailand of British goods and services, investment from Thailand to the UK, and mutual improved market access to help grow our bilateral trade. 

As an Investment and Technology Adviser, the successful candidate will support the Head of Investment and Technology by carrying out research to support key Thai investors and corporates in the UK, support programming on technology and facilitate engagements between the Head of Investment and Technology and high-net-worth Individuals. You will also carry out administrative tasks such as setting up meetings, arranging travel and input into briefings for meetings. Part of a high-profile team at the British Embassy, you will need to be a self-starter, able to manage your own time effectively, evaluating options, impacts, risks and solutions – knowing when and how to seek advice from others.

DBT Thailand team works closely with our Headquarters teams in London, regional and local colleagues, representatives of the three Devolved Administrations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, with a key objective of driving trade and foreign investment into the UK. Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Market research and briefing

  • Assist the Head of Investment and Technology in researching specific investment and technology export opportunities.
  • Input into briefings for His Majesty’s Ambassador and other senior officials (to be signed off by the Head of Investment and Technology).
  • Support in the compilation of investment and corporate intelligence reports.
  • Develop brief company profiles and pitch decks to be used by the Head of Investment and Technology to engage with Thai investors, corporates and High Net Worth Individuals.

Corporate engagement and programming

  • Support engagement with Thai investors and corporates and follow-up with working-level counterparts to understand expansion plans, their interest in the UK and how to progress opportunities.
  • Support the Head of Investment and Technology to deliver investment and technology projects and trade missions.
    Administrative support
  • Support the wider Investment and Technology team, coordinating and arranging meetings with key investors, corporates and contacts, including transport arrangements and meeting materials.
  • Input information into DBT central database including recording of engagements with key investors, corporates and stakeholders.
  • Update investors database and liaise with key Thai investors to ensure information are accurate.
    The A2 will need to remain flexible to pick up new opportunities outside of these areas and to support across the team.

All staff will be expected to make a corporate contribution to the smooth running of the British Embassy, either through a committee membership or another voluntary role.

  • Proven ability to work with business (either in the private sector or public sector).
  • Good communicator at all levels, spoken and written.
  • Experience dealing with high-level contacts/ High-net worth individuals and key investment contacts.
  • Strong administration and organisation skills.
  • Flexible and reactive to new issues and priorities.
  • Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing a sometimes heavy workload.
  • Experience in completing timely and accurate written information in English.
  • IT proficiency – Using MS Office, Canva and ability to learn FCO systems.
  • Ability to travel within Thailand.

Language requirements: 

Language: 

  • Thai and English Language ability

Level of language required: 

  • A minimum English proficiency equivalent to IELTS level 6.5 (no official test result needed)

  • Experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Experience or knowledge of business in the UK or Thailand.
  • Analytical / statistical background.

The British Embassy Bangkok encourages all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training (courses) and informal (job-shadowing, coaching, on-the-job training etc.). The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCDO resources. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring. All staff are eligible for 5 L&D days a year.

Working patterns:

This is a full time role – 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday.

We are currently operating a hybrid working pattern with staff expected to work from the Embassy for 60% of their working week.

The Embassy has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. In crisis/emergency situations you may need to work as required to support the Embassy response, sometimes on a shift pattern, which may result in unsociable hours and/or weekend working.
