The British Embassy in Berne is part of a worldwide network representing the UK’s political, economic and consular interests. We are recruiting for a Communications Officer to join our Communications Team full-time.

This is an exciting and fast-moving role, and you will work on a wide array of issues from media relations and public diplomacy to event management and digital communications/diplomacy. 

We are looking for a highly organised, dynamic, creative, and proactive individual, who has experience in communications, public relations, public diplomacy or a similar relevant field, with evidence of good interpersonal , time management, and analytical skills.  You will need to be able to work and take decisions without detailed oversight, think quickly on your feet, and manage priorities effectively. Confidence, judgement, writing skills, languages, and teamwork are essential qualities.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Strategic communications:  Working with the Head of Communications to develop, deliver, monitor, and evaluate different types of communication campaigns to positively influence thinking and perceptions of the UK in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.. Developing a quarterly comms report detailing stats and stories, as well as celebrating wins and highlighting learnings. Reporting key wins to London, maintaining close links with the wider Comms network.

  • Digital diplomacy: Growing our social media channels and audiences to provide informative and creative content for our followers, communicating our work on the UK’s priority issues, including running digital comms campaigns and tracking as well as analysing stats.

  • Media monitoring: Providing daily summaries of the local news to help inform Embassy colleagues and others of key issues to help them better understand Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

  • Administrative support: General duties including responding to correspondence, budget management, stakeholder tracking/contacts mapping/stakeholder mapping, supporting with funding bids, and helping organise events/cantonal visits/workshops/cross-Embassy projects to support the Embassy’s public diplomacy and policy objectives.

  • Fluency at C2 level in English and German, according to CEFR Framework*, or equivalent.

  • Degree-level qualification, preferably in communications, public relations or a related field.

  • Experience of designing visuals and graphics for social media, including skills in photography, video editing skills, sound, and music.

  • Excellent social media skills (X, FB, LinkedIn etc), including in the latest advances (Apps, trends, etc.).

  • Detailed knowledge of the Swiss and Liechtenstein media scene, including journalists; social media audiences; influencers; bloggers, etc.

  • Experience of working collaboratively and engaging effectively with different levels within an organisation.

  • Experience of reaching out to and working with (high-level) stakeholders.

  • Experience of event and visit organisation.

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).

  • Experience of working in an office environment (minimum 2 years), in particular in Communications, Public Relations or a related field.
  • Strong organisational skills, including the ability to deliver high quality work to tight deadlines, working at a fast pace, helping to plan forward thinking campaigns based around fixed dates, and to multi-task effectively.

  • Experience of writing for professional purposes, including press releases, social mediaposts , internal communications, research and report writing.

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week Permanent position subject to a probation period of 3 months.

Monthly salary for this position is 7,509.00 CHF gross, payable 13 times a year.

The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys an average of 14 public holidays per year. Specific training and mentoring for the role will be provided for the successful candidate. This may include training in London and the European region.

The “Start Date” is only an estimated date may vary depending on the SC outcome and depending on the Candidate’s availability (open to negotiation with the Hiring Manager).

The successful candidate will have a tailored induction programme. 

The FCDO’s International Academy offers a range of learning opportunities, including accredited qualifications, to help you learn about the work of the UK government internationally, how diplomacy works, and to develop your professional skills. Funding is also available to support your bids for further external training that will benefit you in the role, for example to deepen knowledge and expertise in climate and energy policy matters.

The final appointment and commencement will be dependent upon successful security clearance and subject to a professional background check. The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance. The applicant will be vetted to a achieve a security clearance (SC level) both from UK and Switzerland.

Visa/work permit requirements: All applicants should have the right to live and work in Switzerland. Applicants must hold a full passport valid for at least 18 months for any EU / Schengen country.
