Be part of the Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) mission to drive more trade and investment between South America and the UK.

We are looking for an organised, dynamic and pro-active individual to join our team for an exciting internship. The successful candidate will provide administrative support to the Life Sciences and Defence and Security Leaders at the Department for Business & Trade (DBT) office in Colombia, including (but not limited to):  research and analysis of data within a designated sector and strategic and logistical support.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Research: help in the formulation of market studies for British and Colombian companies and the online management of customers; maintenance of the team’s project database, and assistance in the identification of new opportunities for British business in Colombia.
  • Event coordination: support to the organisation of official events and visits, including the preparation of agendas, arrangement of meetings and all related logistic activities.
  • Stakeholder management: develop and maintain contact with local (private and public) stakeholders, keeping record of all activities in the team’s databases.
  • Provide cross-cutting support to the DBT Colombia team (and other Embassy sections if needed) as required and perform other tasks as requested by the Life Sciences and Defence Officers, or other heads of the DBT team.
  • Support the wider work of other Embassy sections (when required), including internal coordination and planning, events, analysis and briefing, and contribute to the corporate objectives of DBT Latin America and Caribbean.

  • Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate studies in International Business, Law, Marketing, Finance, International Relations, Business Management, Economics, Industrial Engineering or similar degrees in a Colombian university. Applicants who do not meet this requirement will not be considered.
  • Availability of at least 6 months before their graduation date, in order to complete the internship. Applicants who do not meet this requirement will not be considered.
  • Availability to start their internship in the proposed date (We are currently recruiting several interns at the Department for Business & Trade. Successful candidates will start the role in January 2025).
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English).
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Must have the legal status to live and work In Colombia in their own right, from time of application.

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience working in teams.
  • Experience in event management.
  • Interest in the Life Sciences, Defence, Security, and/or Cybersecurity sectors.
  • Wider understanding of the Colombian Government structure and regulatory framework in the mentioned sectors.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate. 

Learning and development opportunities:

The Embassy and the DBT LATAC network offer a wide range of learning and development opportunities throughout the year.  

Successful candidate will have access to some internal training and job shadowing, as well as the opportunity (depending on interest and availability) to work on cross-embassy teams or projects. 

Working patterns:

Full time. Monday to Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Must have the legal status to live and work in Colombia. 

The successful candidate must be enrolled in undergraduate studies in International Business, Law, Marketing, Finance, International Relations, Business Management, Economics, Industrial Engineering or similar degrees, in a Colombian university. It is mandatory that the candidates are students with availability of at least 6 months before their graduation date, in order to complete the internship.

The candidate understands and agrees to the starting date.

Social Security: EPS and ARL.
