Main purpose of job:

The Digital Communications Officer is responsible for the overall end-to-end management of the UKinIndia’s social media channels. This includes the whole suite of digital content production such as filming and photography, scripting and story boarding, writing effective social media copy, video editing and graphic design. The job holder will also be tasked with providing regular monitoring and timely evaluation reports of our social media channels to improve our digital performance and upskill the wider India communication network in digital know-how by providing expert training and advice. The jobholder will report to the Head of Digital Strategy at the British High Commission in New Delhi.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

We are looking for a proactive Digital Communications Officer to help manage the British High Commission’s digital footprint in India. The ‘News and Digital’ team sits at the heart of the communications network, working on issues across the breadth of UK’s engagement in India. Work will be varied and fun – you’ll be creating multimedia content and designing messaging on everything from tech partnerships to climate campaigns, promoting trade and investment topics – and everything in between.  Wherever possible you will be designing content to draw out the human impact of UK-India collaboration. 

Building on our communications strategy and priorities, you will be responsible for enhancing the social media performance of UKinIndia channels and lead on their respective growth strategies. You will be responsible for working with policy colleagues and strategic communications leads to create highly professional pieces of content that deliver key UK messages. This will require working closely with colleagues across different locations. You will be the expert on emerging social media trends, tools, and support the Head of Digital Strategy in setting priorities for the regional digital channels to enhance their strategic understanding of social media content production and evaluation, and empower network communication leads to craft the regional multimedia collaterals. 

You’ll have a series of specific responsibilities but will also be expected to work flexibly as part of the wider digital team, covering for others when required. Specific job holder responsibilities may include:

  • Manage the ‘UKinIndia’ channels across digital platforms, including through a well-planned content calendar, crafting, and publishing high quality digital content.
  • Support video production and video editing for the UKinIndia network by ensuring that our scripts and products have a clear message, the right tone and are in the appropriate format.
  • Lead on conducting a fortnightly evaluation of the UKinIndia’s five core social media channels i.e., X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. The evaluation will inform the way we communicate across our channels and will need to include quantitative insights, qualitative analysis, areas of improvement, etc.
  • Conduct an annual competitive benchmarking exercise for our social media channels. This will be mapped against the performance of different diplomatic missions in India.
  • Act as in house photographer and videographer for key events, as and when required.
  • Work with wider digital team to execute the News and Digital Strategy, ensuring that the UKinIndia channels are run in a way that engages our target audience and delivers UK messages. And when needed, implement, and evaluate paid online campaigns, which are in line with the objectives in our News and Digital Strategy.
  • Provide expert training and advice to the wider UKinIndia network in order to facilitate better quality digital work. This includes training on filming, video editing, photography and creating impactful content for specific platforms.
  • Work with communications and policy colleagues in the British Deputy High Commissions across India to increase the quality and impact of our regional digital channels.

The jobholder will be able to access a wide range of English language online and face-to-face training delivered for the UK Government in Britain and abroad. They will have opportunities to access specialist training for government communicators. Much of the learning is on the job, which will be diverse and varied.

The work of a diplomatic mission can be unusual, and the subject matter can range from trade and investment to defence and security to education and visas. The jobholder should be able to hit the ground running, learning quickly about a wide range of issues. 
The job holder may be called upon to support the wider communications team when necessary, so a degree of flexibility is required.

Essential skills on arrival:     

  • At least two years of work experience in a social media marketing role, multimedia production role or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience producing visual content and managing a range of key digital platforms including but not limited to X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Basic photography and videography skills.

Language requirements:

  • Language: English and Hindi.
  • Level of language required: The jobholder must have full professional fluency in English with good working knowledge of written and spoken Hindi. Knowledge of additional languages of India is also desirable.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience of working in an international, multicultural organisation.
  • Strong knowledge of desktop publishing and multimedia editing software including Canva, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Brandwatch.
  • Degree in digital communication, journalism, public relations, or similar

For British High Commission candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.

For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 75,359 month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Special Allowances.

Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family which includes self, spouse/partner and children up to an age of 23years and irrespective of age, only if with, physical or mental disability.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.

Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. 

Please note – Provident Fund Transfer in and out from EPFO is not possible as BHC PF is managed by a private PF trust governed by Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. The staff still has the option to transfer out and in from a privately held PF trust which are not governed by EPFO.
