Driver / Messenger

Main purpose of job:

The High Commission Driver is responsible for providing a safe, efficient, and effective service to High Commission staff and official visitors when required. This includes, but is not limited to, regular vehicle maintenance, route planning and driving in accordance with Botswana’s Road Traffic Laws. The High Commission Driver is expected to be discreet, courteous, have strong customer skills and to ensure the vehicle is always clean, in good running condition and regular maintenance schedules are followed.  He/She will display a willingness to help colleagues, including on tasks beyond the duties listed below, in accordance with the High Commission’s policy on team working. He/She will aim to always provide a first-class service.  

Roles and responsibilities:

General Driving Responsibilities

  • Always ensure the safety of passengers and vehicles.
  • Provide safe and punctual driving services to staff and official visitors to appointments, functions, and airports during office hours, and after hours as necessary, following any pre-arranged programmes/itineraries as required.
  • Regularly check the driver schedule, on the transport booking systems or as instructed by the Line Manager.

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Ensure sound running of all official vehicles, report and arrange minor repairs where necessary.
  • Daily check of oil, water, brake fluid, battery, and tyres of all official vehicles. Ensure vehicles are kept in a clean condition, both inside and out. Maintain daily logs to confirm checks have been carried out.
  • Ensure vehicles always have adequate fuel levels and are filled up with petrol every Monday/ day to be determined. Indicate when refuelling has taken place in vehicle log.
  • Ensure vehicles are serviced on time and schedule vehicle servicing time with Line Manager. Maintain hard and soft copy log of this.
  • Maintain essential equipment in the vehicle e.g., first aid kits and mileage logs.

Deliveries

  • Check mail daily at Botswana Post, Main Mall (Private Bag Parcel Office).
  • Deliver correspondence, collect documents etc to and from Government authorities/Organisations/other stakeholders as and when required.
  • Deliver drinking water once a week or when needed to the Office, and the Official Residence.

Other

  • Obtain quotes for small items of equipment and supplies as directed.
  • Responsible for monthly recurring supplier card payments or other one-off payments when needed. Ensure all GPC spend is reconciled in a timely manner and within FCDO time limits.
  • Responsible for Weekly Generator checks and Diesel top-up for all properties and office and maintain service logs.
  • Supervision of maintenance contractors in the office and residences when required.

  • Driver’s license
  • Good knowledge of navigating Gaborone and surrounding areas
  • Basic IT skills

  • Previous experience as a Driver ideally in a Diplomatic Mission
