The British Embassy in Cairo is looking to recruit a Political Officer under the Political Internal team, job grade Executive Officer (EO) to cover a maternity leave for six (6) months with a possible further extension of up to six (6) months.
The successful candidate will provide the Embassy with expert insights and advice on Egyptian politics and civil society. Maintain strong relationships with external political contacts. Contribute to a strong UK-Egypt relationship by supporting regular visits by senior officials and ministers from the UK. Work as part of a high performing political and press team.
Roles and responsibilities:
This busy and interesting job requires a flexible worker who can contribute to a fast-paced environment. We are looking for a highly motivated individual, able to demonstrate an active interest in and understanding of Egyptian politics and civil society. It provides an excellent opportunity for someone with a keen interest in politics and human rights, who would like to develop their political analysis and communication skills.
- Monitor and analyse political developments and trends in Egypt, including (but not limited to) government, civil society, human rights, religious freedoms, socioeconomic and gender.
- Utilise and help maintain a diverse and strong network of external contacts to inform that understanding and identify emerging issues of importance.
- Provide in-depth, high quality regular written reporting in English to the Ambassador and colleagues in London.
- Support a regular stream of inward visits by UK ministers and officials, including by developing visit programmes, drafting briefing, and providing logistical support.
- Organising political events within the Embassy such as round-tables and dinners.
- Provide support to political section in other areas as required, such as programme management.

Eligibility:
Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in Egypt.
Remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of USD 1,622 per month, subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations, based on a 36 hours per week. However, employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
We offer a competitive package including medical benefits, performance related bonus, recreational facilities, opportunities for job related training and development, etc. There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
The role is for a full-time employment, on a fixed-term contract of six (6) months to cover a maternity leave, with a possible further extension of up to six (6) months, subject to three (3) months’ probationary period.

Process:
The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around 2-3 months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidate’s profile and UK footprint. You may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign, and we are working hard to minimise any disruption.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
