Who are we? 

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Ukraine team. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has overall responsibility for promoting UK trade across the world and attracting foreign direct investment to the UK.  We are a specialised international economic government department with responsibility for negotiating international trade policy, supporting business, and delivering an outward-looking trade diplomacy strategy.

DBT Ukraine at British Embassy Kyiv is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic, and consular interests overseas.

Main purpose of job:

Working closely with businesses across the UK and Ukraine, you will play a key role in delivering a quality service to a range of businesses looking to export to Ukraine in the energy sector. You will be working colleagues in the UK on export-related enquiries from British companies, with the aim of helping them to enter or expand their presence in Ukraine.

This position will also actively contribute to DBT’s role in supporting Ukraine in rebuilding itself physically and economically. DBT will play an important role in contributing to Ukraine’s recovery – by identifying and working with UK companies who can help meet Ukraine’s urgent needs to replenish its energy production and distribution facilities. This will be a busy and rewarding role, working closely with the Ukrainian government and private sector to define their requirements at central and regional levels, and helping to coordinate resource and expertise in the UK that can help rebuild Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and economy.

Your objectives on the job will include:

1.     Promoting exports of UK goods and services to Ukraine in the energy sector and leading on DBT Ukraine activity including:

  • following-up on trends in the energy industry and on energy policies in Ukraine.
  • planning and delivering activities e.g. promotional events and trade missions to promote UK goods and services.
  • Providing matchmaking and door-opening services for UK companies interested in expanding to the Ukrainian market.
  • facilitating business-to-government relationships for UK companies to raise market access barriers.

2.      Providing informed advice, market information and practical DBT assistance to British companies exporting to or operating in Ukraine.

3.      Building industry specific networks by participating in the work of relevant associations and unions in both the Ukrainian and British energy sectors.

4.      Monitoring the energy security situation in Ukraine and contributing to the wider work of the Energy Delivery Group in BE Kyiv and energy leads across UK government departments.

You may be required to work on other priorities, according to the needs at the time.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Leading on the provision of support to British exporters operating in Ukraine and assist new ones with developing a market entry strategy.
  • Achieving export wins in energy and civil nuclear sectors by organising events to match the UK offer with local demand.
  • Identify commercial opportunities and address market access barriers for UK companies in the Ukrainian energy sector.
  • Plan and deliver targeted campaigns and activities (e.g. trade missions, seminars) to promote UK goods and services in the energy sector.
  • Developing a strong network of contacts in the energy sector – including across suppliers of equipment and services – and facilitating introductions to further UK business interests.

Our Ideal Candidate Shows:

  • A proven track record of building relationships with businesses;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Ukrainian (C1 level or higher according to the *CEFR for languages);
  • Sound knowledge of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, biogas), civil nuclear, electrical grid market trends;
  • Strong networking skills and ability to build relationships with senior stakeholders;
  • Excellent MS Office skills;
  • Strong communication skills (both written and oral), with experience in facilitating meetings or workshops and comfortable in speaking to senior audiences;
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills.

Nice to have:

  • An understanding of the UK energy sector;
  • Knowledge of the energy sector in Ukraine;
  • Experience in conducting marketing events / campaigns / lobbying.

This is a permanent contract position for 40 working hours per week including 1 hour per day for lunch.

The start date mentioned in the advert is just an expected start date. The appointment can start earlier or later depending on several factors.

The successful candidate will benefit from:

These include DBT International Trade Profession, sector knowledge-building courses, performance management and leadership courses, diversity, and inclusion.  Several civil service courses are mandatory for new entrants e.g data handling, security related courses.
  • Opportunity to manage some bilateral projects for which the person will have more direct responsibility.
