Main purpose of job:

The position will mainly assist the Food & Drink and Agri-tech Trade and Promotion activities in Mexico, but other sectors may be reviewed. This is a fascinating and busy role allowing someone interested in business development to work in a great diplomatic mission at an exciting period in UK/Latin America Trade and investment relations. The primary role of this position is to offer commercial and administrative support to the Food & Drink and Agri-tech Team within the Department for Business and Trade at the British Embassy in Mexico. This role will operate under and report directly to the Food & Drink and Agri-tech Trade Officer in the team.

The successful candidate will collaborate with UK exporters and investors in the Food & Drink and Agri-tech sectors, aiming to enhance trade and investment activities. The successful candidate will support and develop relationships with British and Mexican companies, and deliver an impactful programme of activities focussed on highlighting the UK’s expertise in the mentioned sectors. The successful candidate is also expected to carry out research and to provide support for events.

Roles and responsibilities:

The selected candidate will:

  • Support the commercial team with the Food & Drink High Value Campaign.
  • Assist the team on commercial missions, visits and events that are planned for the year.
  • Be able to analyse commercial reports to provide feedback to British companies interested in Mexico.
  • Update information on the sectors (one pagers, databases, calendars, pipelines, tracking system).
  • Do research and provide a professional analysis to companies interested in the market.
  • Prepare news briefings to the commercial team with relevant information regarding the trends in the Food & Drink and Agri-tech sectors.
  • Liaise with stakeholders and relevant contacts.
  • Support marketing Food & Drink and Agri-tech activities when needed.
  • Support the Agri Attaché in Mexico.
  • Engage with colleagues and stakeholders in Mexico, the wider LATAC region and the UK to deliver projects and events.

MUST be able to write reports both in English and Spanish.

Essential on arrival:

  • The applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated (e.g. International Relations, Economics, Administration, International Business, Engineering on relevant field, etc.).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in both languages.
  • Understanding of the full range of MS Office suite including Outlook, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Confident in dealing with a range of contacts at all levels.
  • Organised and efficient in work and time management.
  • A positive and flexible team player who is willing to contribute to the team’s overall objectives.
  • Able to deal with a range of competing priorities in a calm, efficient and professional manner, with a keen eye for detail.

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right.  

Language requirements:

English and Spanish

Level of language required: Excellent verbal and written skills.

Desirable:

  • Awareness of the Mexican Agriculture and Food & Drink sectors.
  • Experience or knowledge of database management and market research.
  • Experience or knowledge in customer service.

The British Embassy in Mexico City and the Department for Business and Trade offers a wealth of L&D opportunities with funds to take courses and learning, online resources, sector knowledge, in house training, and study leave. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.  Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

The successful candidate is expected to work 25 hours per week. While the expectation is to work under a hybrid model in line with Embassy’s policy (3 days working from the office), the candidate must be based in CDMX.
