The British Government’s Consulate in New York has an exciting opportunity for a flexible self-starter to join the Policy, Political and Public Affairs (PPPA) team as a Global Issues Officer. This opportunity is a rewarding role which supports and further develops the special relationship between the UK and the US, working at the forefront of international diplomacy to make a real difference globally. The UK’s Consulate in New York is responsible for the UK’s relationship with the states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, as well as Fairfield County.

In this role you would be working in a diverse international environment with six UK Government departments based in the Consulate. UK diplomats, armed forces personnel and other country-based staff operating across the British Government’s network of Consulates and Government Offices in the United States. This network provides a platform for approximately 30 Government departments and agencies to conduct their work in the United States and is made up of over 900 staff with a rich and diverse background, skill sets, and experiences.
This is a chance to directly contribute to the way in which both Governments collaborate and negotiate on global campaigns and issues, such as climate and philanthropy. This is a varied role and a new position, with scope for the job holder to shape. The job holder will report to the Head of PPPA but will work with teams across the Consulate and the US Network including climate policy leads in DC.
The ideal candidate will be able to work with minimal supervision and to build up new networks. It is vital that they are a team player, and able to understand the objectives of different parts of the Consulate. For Ministerial visits, a strong focus on detail and working at pace is essential.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Maintain and drive UK interests with a network of contacts on philanthropy and climate, working both with DC and with UK based stakeholders.
- Build up relationships at State level, including through the possibility of MOUs, coordinating across the consulate.
- Organise and deliver the Consulate’s work on the Marshall Scholarship programme and build the Consulate’s relationship with leading Universities.
- Lead and deliver Ministerial or senior official visit programmes and events, including UNGA.
- Support the Head of the PPPA team with additional policy areas, including in homeland security/rule of law.
- Chair the Consulate’s Honours Committee.

Working patterns:
Requires standard working pattern of 40 hours per week, with occasional travel and events outside of core hours of 9 am to 5 pm, Monday – Friday.
