Main purpose of job:
The purpose of the Head of Climate Change Policy job is to build on the close UK-India relationship on climate as India delivers ambitious 2030 commitments and net zero emissions by 2070. The job is part of the Development, Climate, Science and Tech Section at the British High Commission, New Delhi.
The UK in India works together to deliver the 2030 Roadmap for India-UK future relations. The roadmap sets out British and Indian governments’ priorities and a partnership focusing on re-energised trade, investment and technological collaboration that improves the lives and livelihoods of citizens of both countries. India-UK leadership in climate, clean energy and health that acts as a global force for good.
The Head of Climate Change Policy job will involve understanding the UK and India’s positions on the UNFCCC negotiations as well as other multilateral platforms. It will involve working closely with the Indian government as well as a range of Whitehall stakeholders including the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office. You will need to have a passion for climate change and be able to write clear briefs and policy documents which will be shared with UK ministers and senior officials. The work will be fast paced, and you will need to be able to digest written and oral material and instructions quickly to produce high quality policy work.
The post holder will develop and communicate our position with India, advance plans for joint collaboration including through projects and programmes, build relationships with key Ministries, UK government colleagues in the India network, stakeholders including private sector, think tanks and NGOs. You will engage with UK teams working on communication and events, programmes, and Ministerial dialogues to determine how to use these to best effect in delivering outcomes and strengthening the UK-India climate partnership.
The post-holder will require expert climate change knowledge from a global, UK, and India context and will require strong coordination, engagement, and influencing skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication abilities (in English). The role is a leadership role – both thought and policy leadership as well as leading the climate agenda across the UK Government in India, it will manage a team of four members of staff who will provide policy, programme and logistical input.

For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 259,018 per month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation Fund
Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family which includes self, spouse/partner and children up to an age of 23years and irrespective of age, only if with, physical or mental disability.
No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.
Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holders will need have, or be able to obtain, a valid special work permit issued from Government of India (GOI) to work in the British High Commission (BHC). BHC will not be able to sponsor work visas or obtain/ assist with the special work permit from GOI. Offers of employment made to OCI card holders will be conditional upon candidates obtaining a special work permit.

Please note – successful applicants will be offered employment on Country Based Staff (CBS) terms and conditions. This is not a permanent UK Civil Service position and does not attract diplomatic immunities and privileges (other than what an individual may already hold if they are a recognised partner/family member of a serving diplomat).

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
Please note – Provident Fund Transfer in and out from EPFO is not possible as BHC PF is managed by a private PF trust governed by Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. The staff still has the option to transfer out and in from a privately held PF trust which are not governed by EPFO.
