Main purpose of job:

We are looking for a high-calibre colleague to join our dynamic team. Your role will be to further strengthen the UK-India Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) relationship. India is currently the second largest investor in the UK. You will work out of the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai for the Department for Business & Trade (DBT) within the UK Government Diplomatic Network in India. You will lead the DBT Investment Team for Western India, with colleagues in Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad, driving high value investment from this region into the UK. Manage and inspire a team to meet and beat investment targets and model the UK in India Network values. You will play an active role in the Pan-India Senior Management Team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for building close relationships with C- suite leaders, existing investors, as well as identifying potential new investors across a range of sectors. You will work to meet challenging targets across a range of sectors, from ICT, Life Sciences, Automotive, Aerospace, Engineering or Technical consulting sectors. You will work to engage on or support investment initiatives and programmes to promote the UK strengths and connect entrepreneurs, scaling companies and established serial investors with sophisticated and targeted opportunities for business growth.

You will be a self-starter, able to show initiative and work independently, collaboratively, and at pace, without losing sight of priorities, motivated to deliver results against a set objectives and deadlines.

This is a challenging, varied and high-profile role and presents an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and commercially driven professional with excellent account management and relevant business experience. The post holder will be expected to work flexibly and show.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Lead strategically and operationally in Western India for marketing the UK as a great business investment location and attract high value investment projects into the UK through active targeting and working closely with clients in realising their investment objectives.
  • Lead the team on the identification of and engagement with agreed priority sectors, creating and presenting value propositions of the benefits of locating in, and doing business with UK.
  • Strategizing & leading the team on delivering compelling campaigns, programmes and activities to attract investment in key sectors and in line with Government priorities.
  • Lead and support the team to set up and manage extensive lead generation, building strong pipelines of high value and sustainable investment projects for the UK.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts including CXO level relationships across top Indian business, trade promotion bodies, Government and multipliers across Western India and the UK in priority business sectors and leading on account management practices within the team.
  • Identify and build opportunities for visits to the region by UK Ministers and senior colleagues to ‘open doors’ and strengthen business relationships at the very highest levels with existing investors, new prospects, customers and stakeholders.
  • Managing Western India Investment team budgets and activities (missions, events etc.)- so strong financial management is crucial.
  • Provide a strong leadership to a team of six Investment Officers in three diplomatic posts: Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. Lead and oversee team planning, delivery, learning and developing and performance development. Keep abreast of work across the whole UK Government in India to spot and act on synergies.
  • Lead on a number of high-profile investment accounts – companies who either already invest in the UK or hope to do so.
  • Play an active role in the Investment Senior Management Team across India (with the Deputy Trade Commissioner, Deputy Director and Heads of North and South/East India). Provide thought leadership within that group in how to drive continuous improvement across the 30+ strong Investment Team in India.
  • Contribute to the wider corporate agenda, both in the Mumbai Deputy High Commission and across the UK Government Network in India.

  • £50k (subject to change depending on budget availability)

Language requirements:

Language: English.

Level of language required: Excellent level of spoken and written English.

The British High Commission Network in India provides ample L&D opportunities to its staff to grow in their professional journey. The 70/20/10 learning, and development model is applied, with both internal and formal opportunities readily available.

In addition, DBT team provides opportunity for sector specific ‘developing skills & knowledge’ training to increase understanding of the UK market.

Working patterns:

Yes, the Network allows you to work from home for one day per week. So, one day within a five-day working week can be spent at home (if desired), while the other four must be spent in the office, travelling with work, or in meetings outside the office.

Essential on arrival:

Experience working in some aspect of trade and investment in an international context. Team leadership experience. Evidence of having managed senior relationships.

  • Graduate/ post graduate business degree or equivalent working experience.
  • Minimum of 7+ years commercial experience in a marketing, business development, consultancy or trade promotion discipline.
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and relationship building skills across all levels incl. C suite contacts.
  • Excellent knowledge of the UK/India market and trading environment
  • Sound judgement and experience of working in sensitive political environments.
  • Proven ability to manage a portfolio of projects with significant impact/complexity and/or track record of delivering results/success in a consultative sales environment.
  • Strong financial management skills
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal), strong presentation skills with experience of public speaking.
  • Excellent team player with flexible and adaptable approach to work

Desirable:

Experience of working with or in a government setting.

  • A good understanding of both the UK and Indian business environment including future business opportunities.
  • Knowledge of or previous work experience in any of the priority sectors listed.
  • Proven record in successfully leading a team.
  • Experience of working within a government organisation.
  • Further business degree such as MBA.

For British High Commission candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.

For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 259,018 month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation. Salary is non-negotiable.

Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family which includes self, spouse/partner and children up to an age of 23 years and irrespective of age, only if with, physical or mental disability.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.

Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

The staff still has the option to transfer out and in from a privately held PF trust which are not governed by EPFO. Any tax deduction on EPF will be in compliance with local income-tax law and must be complied with in full.”
