An Overview:

The British Embassy in Berne is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests.

We are recruiting an Internal Policy Intern, offering opportunities for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate to gain political engagement, reporting, project management and administrative skills in a busy and high-performing diplomatic mission. This is a varied and challenging role as part of a supportive and ambitious team. It comes at a promising time for UK-Swiss and UK-Liechtenstein relations, on the back of enhanced cooperation leading up to, and since, the UK’s departure from the EU. 

The role entails:

  • Contributing political analysis by researching, briefing, engaging, lobbying and reporting on a broad range of domestic policy issues in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
  • Helping identify priorities for engagement with key stakeholders, and develop a network of contacts in and beyond government, in order to promote and strengthen the bilateral relations between UK and Switzerland and Liechtenstein and with the purpose of helping to identify and advise on opportunities to advance UK policy and soft power objectives.
  • Supporting the organisation and logistical planning of the visits of Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Swiss cantons and Liechtenstein with the aim of building greater understanding of Switzerland at all levels – federal, cantonal, and communal.
  • Supporting with the organisation of high level inward visits from Ministers and senior officials, as well as policy-themed events. This includes coordinating arrangements, including programme and briefing content and logistics. It requires excellent self-organisation and flexibility – and, at times, resilience and an ability to work fast under pressure.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Full professional proficiency in English and German (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework* or equivalent);
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Knowledge of Swiss domestic policy;
  • Track record of academic achievement;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • Good  interpersonal skills and ability to build strong working relationships across an organisation;
  • Ability to forward plan and coordinate activity among stakeholders.

Good to have:

  • Full professional proficiency in French (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework* or equivalent);
  • Knowledge of international politics;
  • Demonstrable experience to research & analyse information (online and offline);
  • Demonstrable work experience in an office environment;
  • Good IT skills (particularly Microsoft Office).

This is a full-time and fixed-term, internship contract for 6 months; of 40 hours per week inclusive of four compulsory 45-minute lunch breaks. 

Embassy opening hours are 0730 – 1830 hrs (Monday – Thursday) and 0730 – 1330 hrs (Friday).

Gross monthly salary is CHF 2190.00. The Embassy also enjoys 13 Swiss/ UK public holidays per year.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearances before a contract is offered.

*Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Switzerland are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Swiss employment law and FCDO guidance for Country Based Staff.

Visa/work permit requirements: The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for Switzerland in order to apply.

The successful candidate will be able to enrol in learning activities during their internship, work directly with UK diplomats (including the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission), and engage with other interns working in the British Embassy in Berne.

Working patterns: The Embassy operates flexible working patterns within an extended working day and a ‘compressed hours’ working week (currently closing at 13:00 Friday). Working from home for one or two days a week is possible, depending on business needs.

Typical hours are 09:00 – 18:00 with a compulsory paid lunch break of 45 minutes (Mon-Thurs), but staff can start earlier/later and finish earlier/later. Time off in Lieu is available in exceptional circumstances where staff are required to work beyond their contracted hours and where agreed in advance with line manager.
