Who we are: 

The British Consulate in Almaty is part of a world-wide diplomatic network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The British Consulate in Almaty is looking for a dynamic candidate to fill in a fixed-term role as an International Trade Advisor. The job holder will be responsible for leading on providing UK companies with export and trade support within the infrastructure sector.

Why should you apply?

Our new International Trade Advisor will be responsible for leading on:

  • Export and trade support to UK companies exporting to and operating in Kazakhstan in the infrastructure sector (covering construction, energy, and civil infrastructure).

  • Facilitating investment partnerships between Kazakh and UK Investors looking to bring UK infrastructure projects to Kazakhstan.

Main responsibilities will include: 

  • Сomprehensive work on the infrastructure sector providing full support to UK companies, chambers and trade associations active in the Kazakh market:
    • Through building strong networks in the UK and Kazakh markets, to identify commercial, strategic and major project opportunities within the infrastructure sector of the Republic of Kazakhstan that could be suitable for UK company involvement;
    • Develop and manage the infrastructure sector strategy and the commercial pipeline, and actively promote these opportunities to UK companies;
    • Design and deliver a programme of outreach activity such as trade missions, webinars, and government-to-government mechanisms, to deliver commercial benefit for UK companies;
    • Keep up to date with the latest trends and developments in the sector;
    • Undertake tailored market-entry reports for companies;
    • Participate and speak at various events to showcase the Kazakh market’s capabilities and vice-versa to promote British expertise and technologies.

  • Identify and work on the removal of barriers to UK business and operations in the infrastructure sector. Full support of British companies, lobbying interests at all levels, working closely with Market access officer, Regional Market Access Co-ordinator and relevant public bodies.

  • Support the Country Director, Ambassador, and Regional Trade Commissioner in representational duties in this sector including drafting briefings and speeches. Manage allocated budgets for individual sector events.

Our ideal candidate shows:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, Russian and Kazakh (at a minimum level of C1 according to CEFR*)

  • At least 3 years professional work experience in relevant area, preferably with exposure to policy making, business development, or marketing.

  • Ability to set and meet own priorities and work with limited supervision.

  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines, along with resourcefulness in solving problems.

  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, including the ability to deal comfortably with high level officials and contacts.

 

It will be a plus:

  • Good knowledge and understanding of UK business environment.

  • Prior experience of working with or within the private sector, government, diplomatic mission or international organization.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position of one year, with the possibility of renewal, for 36 hours per week, from Monday to Friday.

Employees are entitled to annual leave entitlement pro-rata based on 25 days total per calendar year. In addition, the Embassy observes up to 14 days public holidays marking different Kazakh and UK holidays.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a professional background check and security clearance.
