The British Embassy in Madrid, Spain, is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for the Estates Support Intern.

Main purpose of job:

The selected candidate  will have the chance to join a multinational/multicultural environment that will allow them to learn and get excellent experience in the Department of Corporate Services – Estates Section within the British Embassy, Madrid. The role of Estates Support intern will provide the selected candidate with an opportunity to learn and gain experience of corporate service delivery and facilities management within a multicultural environment in the Estates team of the British Embassy in Madrid. 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Project support, working with the team to support the delivery of technical services to office and residential premises.
  • Market research to identify and select suppliers to meet a range of requirements for goods and services while representing value for money for the UK taxpayer.
  • Support an external UK contactor on the asset register for the Embassy and 8 consulates around Spain.
  • Maintain accurate records in Estates databases and track suppliers’ activities related to buildings’ maintenance.
  • Monitor preventive maintenance work and maintain a forecast of planned activity including for the maintenance of air conditioning, electrics, fire equipment, waste management, pest control, air renovation and lifts etc.
  • Procurement of goods and services, assessing suppliers for value for money.
  • Work with the Procurement team to manage receipts and invoices and to extract usable management data from their records and reports as required.
  • Day to day contract management.
  • Responding to customer enquiries and fault reports.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:

  • Fluent written and spoken Spanish and English (minimum C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
  • Currently studying in technical field (eg. Engineering, construction sector or similar);
  • Some experience of writing and drafting reports;
  • High level of motivation and willingness to learn;
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as on own initiative when required;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point).

This is a part-time internship for 6 months offered to university students enrolled at a Spanish University with an agreement with the Embassy to undertake ‘prácticas curriculares or prácticas extra-curriculares.’ There is a possibility the internship could be extended to 12 months.  Normal working hours are 25 per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check and security clearance procedure.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Interns are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate if this is applicable.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
