Department for Business and Trade (DBT)

Main purpose of job:

The Investment Analyst based in Chile will provide support to the Investment team at the Department for Business and Trade (DBT)’s LATAC network in their efforts to promote investment into the United Kingdom.

Working under the Head of Investment for Chile and the LATAC Director for Investment, you will engage with Chilean and Latin American startups, industry associations, venture capital funds, and established companies to promote awareness of the UK as a destination for FDI. The purpose of this engagement will be to strengthen the FDI pipeline and land investment wins, creating jobs, prosperity, and driving growth in both the UK and LATAC.

The role will require excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of diverse stakeholders. You will be part of a wider regional team promoting investment from across Latin America and the Caribbean. This will require you to develop good working relations with colleagues across the continent to deliver cross-regional investment promotion activities. You will also work closely with DBT colleagues in the Chilean Embassy to deliver investment objectives as part of cross-Embassy and regional strategies. Additionally, you will develop excellent relationships with DBT colleagues in the UK and with UK-based partner organizations to deliver an impactful program of activities focused on developing a robust pipeline of Chilean investors, achieving investment targets, and promoting the UK as a destination for Chilean companies.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on improving bilateral trade and investment relations between the United Kingdom and Chile through increased investment and enhancing knowledge-sharing networks and ecosystems in fast-growing sectors. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in organising investment promotion activities within Chile, and potentially the wider region and the UK. Additionally, you will gain high-level experience dealing with senior business stakeholders and large companies while developing your knowledge of the investment world and specific sectors.

The position will suit an energetic team player, motivated self-starter with a passion and genuine interest in the world of international business and trade. It will require a positive and proactive attitude that thinks in terms of unlocking opportunities for Chilean companies in the UK.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Support our inward investment agenda in Chile, helping deliver a strategy for attracting high-quality FDI and venture capital from Chile to the UK.
  • Support building a strong pipeline of investment projects from key sectors, especially those aligned with the concept of high economic impact investment and other strategic priorities.
  • Support the Chile FDI Head in engagement with existing and potential investors and lead engagement with lower-value prospects and agreed sectors.
  • Support regional FDI initiatives, participate in activities, support investment colleagues across Latin America and the Caribbean as needed, and share best practices.
  • Help plan, organize, and participate in investment-promotion events, including seminars, conferences, and networking sessions that showcase the benefits of investing in the UK to Chilean companies.
  • Lead, monitor and deliver registrations to the Expand your Business Platform collaborating with other DBT LATAC investment colleagues.
  • Conduct comprehensive market research to identify new companies with the potential to expand internationally.
  • Assist Chilean companies and entrepreneurs in successfully locating and expanding operations in the UK.
  • Provide administrative support to the Investment Manager and Country Director related to investment work, including knowledge management, tracking interactions, and monitoring KPIs.
  • Support the wider work of the DBT Chile team and other Embassy sections when required, including regional engagement, internal coordination and planning, events, analysis and briefing, and contribute to the corporate objectives of the British Embassy in Santiago de Chile.
  • Collaborate with other Embassy colleagues covering trade and economic policy, climate change and science and innovation in particular, identifying synergies and contributing to shared goals across the Mission as well as positioning UK companies for future commercial opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other UK government departments within the UK, to support cross-Government priorities such as clean growth and to support future commercial opportunities for the UK.

  • Demonstrated experience in investment promotion, business development, or related fields, preferably in an international context.
  • University degree in Business Administration, Economics, International Relations or related areas.
  • MS Office literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills that facilitate engagement with high profile stakeholders.
  • Proactive attitude with an eagerness to learn quickly and proven track record in showing initiative.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to conduct market research, analyse data, and translate insights into actionable strategies.
  • Familiarity with Chilean trade and economic policy.
  • Legal status to live and work in Chile in your own right, from time of application.
  • High level of written and spoken English and Spanish (at least CEFR C1 or equivalent).

  • Knowledge of the Chilean investment landscape, business practices, and economic trends.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of tech sector and start up ecosystems.
  • Experience of the UK or working with UK-based stakeholders.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
