The British Embassy Baghdad has a vacancy for a Mason Assistant to join our Technical Works Group (TWG) in a large residential compound. The Mason Assistant will be responsible for carrying out various masonry repairs and maintenance tasks to ensure that the compound’s buildings and structures are kept in good condition.
The Mason Assistant will work both indoors and outdoors and must be prepared to work in all weather conditions. They will be required to provide an essential support to the Mason to perform the job’s routine; mixing grouts and moving it to the work area; stand, walk, climb, bend, and stoop for extended periods; and may need to lift, transport, and carry heavy materials and equipment. The job may also involve working in confined spaces and at heights.
The Mason Assistant will work as part of a wider Maintenance Team and will be required to collaborate and communicate effectively with other team members. The job may also involve working in proximity to Compound Residents, and the Mason Assistant must maintain a professional and courteous demeanour at all times.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Assist the Mason with the preparation of materials, including mixing mortar and transporting relevant materials and tools to the work area.
- Aid in the layout and measuring of work areas, following blueprints or instructions from the lead Mason.
- Lay out work with the use of relevant materials such as chalk lines, tapes, squares, plumb bobs, and levels; and mix cement with the use of hoes, cement-mixing equipment, or any other relevant hand tools.
- Clean and maintain tools, equipment, and work areas to ensure a safe and organised environment.
- Assist with performing routine inspections and assessments of the Compound’s buildings and structures to identify any masonry issues that require attention.
- Carry out repairs and maintenance work on the Compound’s masonry structures, including walls, pillars, stairways, and other building components.
- Install, repair, and replace masonry components, including bricks, stone, and concrete blocks.
- Apply various coatings and finishes to masonry surfaces, such as waterproofing and sealants.
- Prepare and mix cement, mortar, and other materials required for masonry work.
- Cut and shape masonry materials to the required size and shape using hand and power tools.
- Maintain accurate records of all masonry work carried out, including materials used and time spent on the job.
- Collaborate with other members of the Technical Works Group (TWG) to ensure that all maintenance tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations when carrying out masonry work.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

- Relevant work experience as a mason assistant or equivalent, ideally for at least two (2) years.
- Solid knowledge of masonry techniques, materials, and tools.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn from experienced masons.
- Ability to follow instructions closely. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Fluent communication skills in Arabic, both spoken and written.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including up to 20 days of annual leave (calculated pro-rata).
The role grade is S3, with a base salary of US$ 986 per month. This base salary is paid 13 times a year. In addition, the role attracts a security allowance payable as part of this package. This security allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment on a permanent contract basis. Employment is also subject to a 90-day probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Thursday from 08:00-14:00. The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and will involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends/ holidays) in the event of an emergency.
The Embassy encourages a culture of continuous learning. Training will be given in the role. All employees have access to the Civil Service Learning platform, which gives access to training to improve job specific skills. Employees are entitled to a minimum number of annual training days.
