Main Purpose of Job:
Indonesia is a nature and climate superpower. It is home to the world’s third largest tropical forests and the largest of coral reefs. Indonesia’s vast areas of peatlands and mangroves are both the largest and most biodiverse in the world. Protection, restoration and sustainable management of Indonesia’s natural assets can help to keep global warming below 1.5°C. At the same time, these natural assets are a vital source of livelihoods for many, including some of the country’s poorest.
The UK’s development programme in Indonesia has climate, nature and sustainability at its core, with senior ministerial interest across the UK government in working in close partnership with the Government of Indonesia. The purpose of this job is to provide leadership and facilitation between the UK Embassy and government of Indonesia to support Indonesia’s ambitious plans for sustainable environments, including the Forestry and Other Land Use Net Sink 2030 Plan and the Blue Economy Roadmap. The jobholder will particularly focus on delivering commitments under the UK’s flagship marine and terrestrial nature programmes: the Blue Planet Fund and Investing in Nature, Forests and Land Use (Inafolu).
What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve:
We are looking for a confident self-starter with excellent soft skills, who can lead the establishment of our bilateral partnerships on marine and forest conservation with the Government of Indonesia, and ensure that those partnerships are delivering against the Government’s priorities. The roles and responsibilities of the jobholder will be to:
- Develop strong working relationships within the environment sector, including with relevant Ministries such as the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Forestry and Ministry of Environment.
- Be the UK’s primary point of contact for the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in Indonesia and bilateral lead on marine cooperation. Lead efforts to oversee and implement a cooperation plan, the Blue Planet Fund Country Plan, for our marine cooperation between the UK and Indonesia. Establish a bilateral steering committee for oversight of our collaboration.
- Support cross-team efforts to establish a new forestry partnership with the Government of Indonesia, including supporting agreement of the partnership scope and establishment of relevant oversight bodies.
- Work effectively with Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) advisors, and consult with the relevant Ministries, to ensure that our portfolio has impact and delivers against the Indonesian Government’s environment ambitions, including the Forestry and Other Land Use Net Sink 2030 Plan and the Blue Economy Roadmap.
- Lead efforts to ensure coherence and co-ordination between implementing partners and components of Inafolu, including through establishing a partners co-ordination forum and work on programme coherence with the MEL team and the Inafolu programme lead.
- Increase buy in and visibility of our environment portfolio’s impact through effective communications and engagement. This includes support for senior engagement (for example at Director or Ambassador level) by arranging meetings and ensuring senior stakeholders are prepared with excellent briefing.
- Lead the Inafolu MEL component, including by providing effective programme management, leading the relationship with the implementing partner and monitoring their performance against commitments.
- Support delivery of meetings with government stakeholders including through effective and impactful briefing.
- Ensure UK environment-related programming led from London and the British Embassy Jakarta supports Indonesia’s priorities, deliver results and impact, and UK support is recognised by Indonesian stakeholders. Ensure embassy-wide programming and our diplomacy take into account environmental issues.
- Provide flexible support to the wider Low Carbon Development Group and British Embassy Jakarta as needs evolve.

Language Requirements:

- At least 4 years experience working in environment or related fields, including ecosystems management, climate and nature finance, biodiversity and conservation

This role is advertised as a 12-month fixed term contract, with possibility of renewal.
The British Embassy Jakarta offers a competitive remuneration package including:

Working Patterns:
Normal working hours are 39.5 (gross) per week: 07:30hrs to 16:00hrs from Monday to Thursday and 07:30hrs to 13:00hrs. At present, all staff working in the FCDO, Jakarta are expected to attend the office for four days per week, subject to change. This includes external meetings, field visits or travel, where required.
Some evening and weekend work is required on occasion. Embassy Standard Terms and Conditions apply and provide for time outside of working hours to be compensated through Time-off-in-Lieu. The job may involve some travel. A willingness and ability to travel is require.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
