Main Purpose of Job:
This role will sit at the heart of the Embassy’s political team, bridging policy and programme objectives.
The jobholder will own and drive aspects of the Embassy’s political work – leading on engagement with the MPR and other democratic institutions and supporting on relationships with political parties and media organisations. They will be expected to support in the development of the Embassy’s wider political engagement strategy, and then build and maintain their own network of political contacts through direct, independent engagement, presenting as a credible and professional UK interlocutor and delivering on UK priorities. They will undertake real-time political analysis and provide both strategic advice and briefings for senior leaders at the Embassy and in London.
The jobholder will lead on a new political strand of the Embassy’s Open Societies Enabling Fund. This will involve managing the Embassy’s relationship with the primary programme delivery partner, overseeing the development of and ensuring progress towards our mutually agreed Theory of Change. Priority areas of work will involve democracy, rule of law and media freedom – establishing and maintaining effective relationships with key departments in London and teams across the Embassy, to ensure the successful delivery of our programme work. The jobholder will be expected to play a leading role in the strategy-setting, monitoring and evaluation of the programme, ensuring value for money and alignment with UK priorities.

Being able to work with a high level of autonomy is also vital to the success of the role, as is the ability to work across teams, inspiring a shared ownership of political priorities based on a firm understanding across the breadth of the bilateral relationship.

Working Patterns:
Normal working hours are 39.5 (gross) per week: 07:30hrs to 16:00hrs from Monday to Thursday and 07:30hrs to 13:00hrs. The team operates a ‘core hours’ policy of 09:00hrs to 15:00hrs with individual flexibility around that and we are open to requests to work condensed hours, subject to business need.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
