The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for a Porter, job grade S3, on a fixed term contract for two (2) years.
As part of the Logistics Team, the Porter will undertake the day-to-day portering of goods and items around the Embassy and its Estate, safely lifting and handling sometimes heavy items, delivering letters and packages securely, delivering against daily work schedules and tasks, and acting on feedback from customers.
The jobholder will be someone who can complete day-to-day tasks to schedule and on time, taking pride in a job well done every time. They will deliver on customer requirements and follow instructions safely and securely and provide the right support to their manager and the team. This is a busy role that calls for a well-organised person with drive and excellent team working skills.
This is a rewarding role for a candidate interested in improving their skills in a unique environment. It will require teamwork, good customer service skills, and resilience.
You will also work to the Embassy’s health, safety, and welfare standards for the benefit of all staff at the Embassy in a ‘zero harm’ culture. You will help reduce the Embassy’s carbon footprint through greater use of renewable energy, reduction in waste and the increase of sustainable practices.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of Senior Management and agreed with the jobholder. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

The Embassy and associated compound are always busy. This brings with it regular and unusual challenges and frequent, short-term requests that have to be prioritised alongside planned work.
We are looking for a confident self-starter and someone who can handle multiple tasks and prioritise with limited supervision. The jobholder will need to be resourceful, resilient, and have a strong track record of working as part of a professional logistical/ delivery team.
You should be comfortable dealing with staff at all levels and be able to build co-operative and productive working relationships with everyone that you come into contact with.
This role also involves occasional heavy lifting so the jobholder must be physically able to lift items up to 30kg in weight. You will be subject to annual occupational health examinations to ensure you remain medically fit enough to perform the role. Reasonable adjustments will be considered to enable you to do your job and lifting equipment provided where it is safe and practical to do so to minimise potential harm. You must use any equipment provided correctly and safely and you will be trained to use it.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 816 per month based on a 40 hours per week.
Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.
This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for two (2) years. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period (as appropriate). The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have a right to live and work in Jordan.
Normal working hours for this role are from 08:00-16:00 from Sundays to Thursdays, with half an hour for breaks. The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends).
The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.
The Embassy follows a 70-20-10 model of learning. Your Line Manager will help you develop a personalised L&D plan and will share opportunities, resources, and guidance to ensure you have any necessary learning for the role with ability to achieve full potential. You are expected to have a proactive approach to your own learning. You will also be encouraged to undertake developmental training and get involved in BE Amman corporate activities that offer an opportunity for professional development.
