Main purpose of job:

The Defence Section Driver role supports the further strengthening of the UK and Malaysia relationship by providing official transport to the Defence Adviser and the Defence Section, as well as supporting the wider British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, when needed. Providing safe and reliable transport plays an important role in ensuring that we are able to deliver Defence-related objectives within HMG (His Majesty’s Government). Other responsibilities include vehicle maintenance and cleaning, and administrative support to the team. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Driving:

  • You will drive the Defence Section vehicle safely and efficiently for the Defence Adviser and/or other official passengers, in accordance with Malaysian laws and regulations.

Your duties will include:

  • Daily vehicle inspection to ensure the Defence Section vehicle remains roadworthy
  • Keep the Defence Section vehicle clean, safe, and serviceable in your care
  • Make sure all passengers use seatbelts
  • Record all journeys accurately
  • Prompt reporting to the line manager of any vehicle faults or damage and/or other issues, including road tax and vehicle insurance renewal
  • Assisting when required with general duties such as hand deliveries, office assistant, event set-up/break down, loading/unloading vehicles, hand deliveries, banking checks, paying bills etc.
  • Other tasks assigned by the line manager when necessary

You will be asked to ensure the confidentiality of passengers’ information (e.g. conversation in the vehicle). You may also be asked to support the handling of diplomatic cargo.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

Defence Section vehicle

  • Possess a valid, Malaysian class D driving licence with at least 5 years driving experience
  • Good knowledge of routes and traffic within the Klang Valley area
  • Working proficiency of the English language
  • Basic IT skills (Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Physically fit
  • Good communication and time management skills
  • Willing to work out-of-office hours when required (TOIL / overtime available)

Language requirements: 

Language: English, Bahasa Malaysia

Level of language required: Good (English), Fluent (Bahasa Malaysia) 

  • Live within reasonable distance of the High Commission as there may be occasions which warrant working outside of office hours

All staff are required to take a role in the High Commission’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this, and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills. 

Working patterns:

The nature of the job means flexible working is not suitable for this particular role, but paid overtime is available.

The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
