Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) team at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.  The team is helping to deliver the UK Government’s Growth mission by promoting British trade and investment, helping companies to succeed, break down market access barriers and deliver our trade policy. 
Reporting to the Director of Trade and Investment, based in the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, the job holder will lead on our work to attract and grow investment from Malaysia to the UK.  You will work collaboratively with teams across the British High Commission; across the Asia Pacific DBT network; and in the UK. 
We’re looking for a dynamic, proactive, organized and enthusiastic team player who can develop effective relationships with colleagues, business and stakeholders.  Working as part of the High Commission you will lead on plans and programmes to build pipelines and deliver projects covering capital investment and FDI.   You will play an important account management role working with senior contacts in Malaysian and UK organizations.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  1. You will identify investment opportunities and provide strategic support for innovative Malaysian companies with quality scalable products or services.
  2. You will lead on account management of key clients ensuring virtual teams work effectively with a focus on outcomes.
  3. Lead on marketing and promotional activities of the UK proposition. This will include the organization and delivery of trade events, webinars, visits/missions, workshops and other activities (in person or virtual) to target Malaysian investors
  4. Work with CEOs and senior staff from diverse businesses from start-ups to institutional investors to assist their internal decision-making on their overseas investment and influence them in favour of setting up in the UK.
  5. You will be expected to have a deep understanding of the investment environment in the UK and of the Government’s support available to investors or be able to quickly develop your knowledge.
  6. Lead on the delivery of first-class visit programmes for VIPs (including ministers) to support our investment objectives.
  7. You will have autonomy to build effective business networks and lead on relationships with Malaysian, APAC and UK stakeholders which help you to communicate the UK proposition and influence investment decisions.
  8. Ensure that CRM systems are maintained and updated accurately and promptly.
  9. Facilitate and enable effective collaboration within a virtual team setup, working with colleagues in Malaysia, Singapore, and throughout the APAC region, to promote investment opportunities through strategic communication initiatives of the British High Commission and the wider DBT network.
  10. Provide occasional support for and/or contribute to other DBT or British High Commission activity

The role will involve working closely with partners in government and industry in Malaysia and the UK; with teams across the British High Commission; and DBT teams in APAC and the UK.  

The successful candidate will be joining a high profile and ambitious team and will be able to develop a wide range of account management and business development skills while developing export opportunities for the UK.  If successful you will have the opportunity to get involved in a diverse range of DBT and corporate workstreams including planning and delivering high profile visits, organizing L&D activities and engaging the business community. 

As DBT Malaysia team’s business priorities evolve, the successful candidate will potentially become involved in supporting other priority sectors/workstreams for DBT Malaysia, and a flexible approach is important.

Budgets related to events and programmes

  • A degree level qualification, preferably in business, economics or equivalent.
  • Successful track record and experience in relationship management, lead generation and business development.
  • Relevant professional experience in the area of business development or working in a commercial or government environment, dealing with and/or networking with external customers.
  • Knowledge of working with government and business in Malaysia
  • Excellent communication, presentation and influencing (written/verbal) skills, in English
  • Personal drive, can-do attitude and enthusiasm to learn with a genuine interest in business and trade.
  • Experience of account management and business development.
  • Strong team player.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and multi-task.
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Excellent IT skills.

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Bahasa Malaysia

Level of language required: Proficient in both written and spoken

  • Experience of working in investment related functions
  • Knowledge of international trade, trade policy and business
  • Knowledge of government structure and business in the UK
  • Communication skills in Malay

  • Understanding how UK international development assistance is managed / implemented;

Working patterns:

Normal working hours are 36.5 per week. BHC Kuala Lumpur supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering, and is committed to staff maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Some evening and weekend work is required on occasions. British High Commission Malaysia Standard Terms and Conditions apply and provide for time outside of working hours to be compensated through Time Off In Lieu.
