Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is responsible for promoting UK trade and investment with the rest of the world, and we support UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. DBT officers at overseas posts liaise with the UK headquarters and other departments across the British Government to generate commercial, policy and institutional collaborations in other markets. 

The successful candidate will be supporting the implementation and development of a pipeline of commercial opportunities in Brazil for UK companies in the healthcare and life sciences areas and supporting the delivery of market access, government relations and institutional engagement strategy. 

It will be required for the candidate to work with both commercial and policy activities in order to support the growth of the UK market share in this sector in Brazil, playing a leading role in visits, events, market research and marketing planning.

Roles and responsibilities:

This is an exciting opportunity to work with improving bilateral trade and relationship between the United Kingdom and Brazil in Healthcare & Life Sciences, especially through supporting the delivery of the team’s commercial and market access strategies. The team currently covers healthcare services and digital health, MedTech, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, amongst other key areas.

You will be responsible for:

  • Scoping business opportunities in Brazil through research, meetings and cold calls with Brazilian companies;
  • Accompanying meetings with Brazilian and UK companies, both virtually and in person;
  • Leading the preparation of market research reports, internal briefings, visiting programmes;
  • Supporting the production of content for events, missions and commercial meetings about the UK offer for business;
  • Assisting with trade missions, seminars, webinars and other events to promote UK-Brazil partnerships across the Healthcare and Life Sciences sector
  • Supporting policy and government relations engagement at all levels and the delivery of market access activities;
  • Providing administrative support to team in Brazil and activities related to broader Latin American team;
  • Monitoring Healthcare and Life Sciences market trends and contribute to sector’s strategic planning

You will support the team on the management of an existing pipeline of well-identified commercial opportunities and scoping new opportunities as they arise. An understanding of the sector will be an advantage, but the ability to learn quickly will be vital in getting up to speed. It will be required strong communication skills and a high level of emotional intelligence that will allow the candidate to pitch approaches appropriately and deliver under different circumstances. 

You will support the delivery of a number of high profile activities engaging with key stakeholders from the government and private sector, so a high level of resilience and professionalism is essential. You will also provide operational support to the Life Sciences team by maintaining client relationship records, databases of contacts and other relevant data; helping ensure the smooth running of the team by performing day-to-day administrative duties, including managing expenses and dealing with suppliers and managing one intern. 

This is an ideal position for someone with the ability to work collaboratively with an international team. The job will be challenging and will require the successful candidate to take responsibility for delivering both quickly and to a high quality standard. We are looking for someone with strong commercial and communication skills, flexible and with capacity to handle multiple projects simultaneously. The successful candidate might be required to undertake domestic as well as international travel.

At times, you may be asked to support areas of work outside your core job. Examples could include supporting colleagues in other parts of the LATAC region, or working on a crisis response.

This position is based at British Consulate General São Paulo.

Essential on arrival:  

  • University degree in Business, International Relations, Marketing, Economics, Public Policy, Medical/Healthcare or related fields OR the equivalent in work experience
  • Minimum of 2 years experience
  • Excellent research and report writing skills in English
  • Ability to solve problems, prioritise, organise and manage multiple tasks
  • Committed team player with ability to self-motivate, resilience, and autonomy
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office package
  • Must have the right to live and work in Brazil

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Portuguese

Level of language required:  Advanced English with excellent writing and speaking capabilities. Fluent Portuguese, with excellent writing and speaking capabilities. Spanish is a plus.  

Desirable:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proactive self-starter, collaborative, organized, responsible, communicative, creative and opened to learn and receive feedback
  • Knowledge/understanding of the Healthcare and Life Sciences sector is a plus
  • Knowledge/understanding of Brazilian business landscape
  • Experience of working in stakeholder relationship management
  • Experience working with events, marketing or eagerness to learn about these fields quickly

Working patterns:

36 hours a week with the possibility of hybrid work. Further flexible working patterns to be discussed directly with the Line Manager.

Learning and development opportunities:

Essential training will be given at the beginning of the term, with on-the-job training available throughout.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
