Security Guards

The British Embassy in Muscat is looking for a dynamic team-player to take up the position of Security Officer, job grade S1 on a fixed term contract for one (1) year.

This position is full-time, based on no more than eight hours per day and maximum 40 hours per and will involve working a varying shift pattern, covering morning, afternoon and night shifts as required. The security team works 365 days a year and covers 24 hours per day.  You will be expected to regularly work weekends, bank holidays and public holidays as part of your rotation. You will also be expected to be flexible to cover shifts at short notice. This job will cover two security sites, 25km apart, the British Embassy in Muscat and the Ambassador’s Residence, Bandar ar Rawdah. You will be expected to cover both sites as part of your work. Preference for location will not be given based on individual home location.

The jobholder will work as part of an established and capable team to ensure the safety and security of staff and families at the Embassy while working in a shift rotation pattern. You must have strong communication skills and the ability to give clear and concise advice on a range of security topics, corresponding to your position and as per policy and procedure.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The jobholder will carry out security duties at the 2 locations (British Embassy and the Ambassador’s Residence) working as a team member on a 24/7 shift rotation. Duties include:

  • Working as part of a team on a shift roster. Conducting security checks, including physical searches of personnel and vehicles, monitoring of CCTV, operating UHF radio network, responding to alarms, and patrolling on foot as directed by the Post Security Manager (PSM) and Regional Security Advisor (RSA).
  • Dealing with staff, visitors, and members of the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Scanning and sorting of incoming mail and deliveries.
  • Maintaining various records and security logs.
  • Acting as first point of contact outside office hours, responding to requests for assistance from Embassy staff and advising any visitors or telephone callers of the regular working hours and details of the official website.
  • Reacting to incidents and issues in a calm and disciplined manner and working as part of a team, including participating in exercises and learning and development activities to understand policy and procedures.
  • Reacting and responding to panic alarms and bomb alarms quickly and safely to assess danger.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other responsibilities on an ad hoc basis, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis affecting UK citizens.

  • At least two (2) years of relevant experience in a customer focussed industry background or uniformed services (police, military) or commercial security or diplomatic security with checkable references.

  • Team player who is also capable of working on their own initiative.

  • Must be physically fit and pass level 5.4 of the bleep test/ Job related fitness test.
  • Must submit for a medical exam due to shift work.

  • Knowledge of industry standard security policies and procedures.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:

  • Hold a right to live and work in Oman.
  • The successful candidate will be required to transfer their visa under the Embassy’s sponsorship.

Working Conditions and Remuneration:

The Embassy offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for the role, including a non-negotiable salary of 500.50 Omani Riyals per month inclusive of all allowances; and use of on-site recreational facilities including a swimming pool and social club.

This position is for a full-time employment, on a fixed-term basis for one (1) year, subject to 3-month probationary period.

Conditioned working hours are 40 hours per week. The security team is on a shift pattern, covering morning, afternoon and night shifts as required. No more than eight ho;urs per day and maximum 40 hours per week. Standard working hours are 0730 to 1430 Sunday to Thursday.

Holiday entitlement is 30 days per year (on a pro rata basis) following successful completion of a 3-month probation period. There are also national holidays determined annually by the Embassy, which usually total 14 days per year.

The FCDO offers a comprehensive L&D package via an internal learning platform. Specific L&D opportunities may be available, upon discussion with the Line Manager.

Employment in the advertised position is dependent on the potential employee having or acquiring valid UK security clearance. Security clearances can take several weeks to process. Inability to obtain a clearance will preclude employment. Loss of a security clearance at any time will lead to termination of employment.

Process:

The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates’ profile and UK footprint. You may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign, and we are working hard to minimise any disruption.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

The start date mentioned in the job advert is a tentative start date and the successful candidate will be required to undergo security-vetting procedures. Any offer of employment will be subject to the candidate achieving suitable clearances and reference checks. 

The successful applicant’s employment will only be confirmed after the completion of any security clearance/checks. The checks can take several weeks to complete, and the applicant will only be employed if the UK security clearance is granted.
