Please note, this is a part-time role, working 20 hours per week. This role is based at the British High Commission in Kingston Jamaica. The successful applicant will provide professional and empathetic front-line consular assistance to British Nationals in Jamaica and the Bahamas, working alongside the Consular Team consisting of x3 full-time Consular Officers a Vice-Consul/Head of Casework and Consul/Head of Team.

The role will involve managing a busy and complex casework portfolio, assisting customers who have experienced significant trauma and distress. As such, a high level of personal resilience is required, along with a strong customer focus and the ability to manage expectations. Regular interaction will be required with members of the public, local, regional and UK authorities as well as other Diplomatic missions in Jamaica and colleagues across the consular network to fulfil the delivery of the FCDO’s Consular Strategy.

There will be opportunities for travel in-country, and within the Americas Consular Network to provide regional resilience, and to attend training or conferences, sometimes at short notice or outside of normal working hours. The Consular Officer reports to the Vice-Consul.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Providing consular assistance in accordance with current guidelines, including visiting British nationals in hospital or jail, providing support to family members following a bereavement, supporting on child custody matters, welfare and or mental health cases and providing advice and assistance to victims of rape or sexual assault.
  • Maintaining close links with local authorities including, but not limited to, law enforcement, prisons and detention centres, medical examiners, hospitals, morgues and mental health facilities.
  • Managing a busy portfolio of complex consular casework in line with consular policy and to a satisfactory conclusion, ensuring global service standards are met.
  • Contributing to casework strategy discussions and sight senior leadership on the more complex cases.
  • Proactively identifying and co-delivering consular outreach initiatives alongside the team, including representing the British government at consular events and some public speaking duties.
  • Accurately administer elements of team budget as necessary.
  • Printing emergency travel documents and facilitating collections, liaising with regional hub colleagues as necessary.
  • Maintaining and updating country information packs to ensure the latest information is available on GOV.UK.
  • Contributing to consular crisis preparedness and response, including testing emergency equipment and providing consular assistance during a crisis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Supporting colleagues in other parts of the America’s consular network as required.

  • Educated to A’ Level /CAPE*with a minimum of CXC/CSEC* level passes in Maths and English Language. *International equivalent qualifications can be provided
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience, to include working with the public handling difficult situations
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Initiative, drive & determination with superior problem-solving skills, sound judgement, common sense and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A good knowledge of multi-cultural Britain, its language, and geography
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel, Word and TEAMs
  • Proven ability to prioritise and multi-task and work autonomously if required
  • Independent right to live and work in Jamaica

  • Educated to degree level
  • A valid driving licence

Please note that this is a Part-Time role of 20 hours per week, with core hours being 08:00 – 12:00 Monday to Friday.  

The British High Commission embraces hybrid working, allowing its staff to typically work from home 2 days a week where work commitments allow. Due to the front-line nature of this role, full (5 days a week) in office working is required during the first six months of employment. Thereafter, the successful applicant may work from home up to two days per week, depending on priorities and ensuring continuity for British nationals requiring in-person assistance.

The selected candidate will be required to complete the Fundamentals in Action training virtually upon arrival and a 5-day Developing Consular Expertise training course in London within 6 – 8 months in the role. Completion of additional mandatory FCDO training such as Data Protection Regulation, Safeguarding and Health & Safety will also be required.

The FCDO values on-the-job learning. This role provides the opportunity to acquire knowledge of consular policy and practice and fine-tune other widely applicable skills such as networking, presentation skills and effective prioritisation.

The Americas Consular Network places great emphasis on promoting learning and development. Additional L & D opportunities are presented for bidding on a regular basis through both the Post and Consular L & D programmes.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

  • The location of this role is Kingston (Jamaica) based and as such, the salary is stated per annum in Jamaican Dollars.
  • The period of probation for this role is six months, though the British High Commission reserves the right to extend this period in order to fairly assess performance.
  • Full induction and coaching will be arranged for the successful applicant.
  • Core office hours for full-time staff are 08:00 to 16.30 Monday to Thursday and 08.00 to 13.00 on Fridays. Part-time hours for this role are stated above.
  • Annual leave entitlement is calculated on a pro-rata basis for part-time staff and is approximately 11 days. In addition to this, the BHC Kingston also observes a combination of up to 14 UK and local public holiday days.
  • Please note the British High Commission is unable to provide any financial relocation assistance for this role.
