Communications, Press and Media

Main purpose of job:

To lead on communications for the British High Commission in Seychelles often working directly to the High Commissioner and ensuring that communications is at the heart of the UK’s diplomatic efforts.

To design and deliver high-quality and high-impact social media and traditional media content in line with the objectives of the British High Commission in Seychelles.

Develop, maintain and grow a network of contacts across Seychelles’ civil society, non-government and community sectors, to help inform the work of the High Commission. Lead of the delivery of the UK-Seychelles partnership – linking the vast range of UK activities in Seychelles to a single communications plan that positions the UK as a trusted and strategic partner for the Seychelles’ government and people.

Provide regular, scheduled analysis of traditional and social media impact, including measures of impact, audience strategies, and recommendations for increased engagement. 

Work closely with the High Commission’s events team to ensure impactful events and engagement delivery.

Design and develop protocols for engagement with traditional media sources, production of social media output and templates for public engagement in support of BHC activity. Engage with the FCDO’s global communications network. 

Conduct a strategic review of all BHC Victoria communications output.

Roles and responsibilities:

The balance of the workload will vary according to the time of year and activities going on, but we have included percentage of time as a rough indication:

Develop, maintain and grow a network of contacts across Seychelles’ civil society, non-government and community sectors, to help inform the work of the High Commission. 20%

Production of social and traditional media content in support of the strategic review and BHC Victoria priorities and project activities. 20%

Design and implement creative online communications campaigns and social media strategies, linked to our objectives. Monitor and re-post HMG communications relevant to Seychelles. 40%

Research and write accurate, appropriate and interesting content (remarks, articles, social media posts etc). Ideally some in Creole. 10%

Maintain and develop excellent links with traditional media contacts and other relevant organisations to communicate positive messages about the UK, HMG and BHC priorities. 10%

Resources managed (staff and expenditure)

Manage the Info, Press and PR budget line

  • Degree-level education;
  • Strong internet/social media and IT skills;
  • Photography, filming and editing skills (sufficient to capture events and make short videos/clips for posting)
  • Fluent oral and written English and a flare for writing interesting content;
  • Ability to respond confidently, professionally and creatively to a range of stakeholders;
  • Enthusiastic and motivated;
  • Creativity, someone willing to propose ideas, and comfortable with the digital world;
  • Confidence, flexibility and ability to cope under pressure and with changing priorities.

  • Strong organisational skills are essential, along with creative flair and an eye for detail.
  • Good oral and written Seychelles Creole.
  • Clean driving licence.

Learning and development opportunities:
The FCDO provides access to an excellent range of Learning and Development opportunities and qualifications through its Diplomatic Academy, which is accessible online and delivered at Post. Comprehensive Civil Service On-line learning is also available. Training on processes specific to the FCDO/HMG will be provided as necessary, with support from professionals in Hubs on hand. Access to a professional network of Press & Public Affairs and Digital Officers globally, plus regional and London conference opportunities and a Communications Hub in Pretoria and HQ in London. Visits to other Posts can be arranged where relevant to assist with learning.

Working patterns:

The Terms And Conditions Of Service (TACOS) allows for flexible working, by mutual agreement. Posting on social media and attendance at evening events out of normal office hours will be required, with Time off In Lieu provided.
