The British Embassy in Sofia is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Project Manager within Home Office International Operations (HOIO) who will be responsible for managing UK government-funded illegal migration projects in Bulgaria, focusing on combatting organised immigration crime

The post-holder will contribute to the wider objectives of the British Government’s Bulgaria network to support the Embassy’s positive working environment by becoming part of the British Government’s presence in Bulgaria.

What will you be expected to achieve?

  • Lead on the design and development of future One HMG funded projects to support capacity building within Bulgaria to support UK priorities under OIC.
  • Coordinate with UK Home Office and wider Embassy teams (e.g. National Crime Agency, HM Revenue and Customs and Crown Prosecution Service) to ensure policy input to project design and coordination with other projects.
  • Liaise with Bulgarian authorities to increase understanding of what support and assistance they require to support OIC priorities and to deliver projects collaboratively.
  • Coordinate activity with the policy officer, to ensure project activity fits with broader policy engagement objectives (e.g. policy or strategic discussions)
  • Collaborate with Press and Public Affairs colleagues to effectively publicise project activity and demonstrate tangible results.
  • Lead on procurement and on financial management in line with UK Government guidelines, including providing responses to routine enquiries about project finances and data.
  • Reporting to the Programme Board on project progress (financial and impact) and liaise across the Embassy teams to identify and develop project proposals to maximise available funding.
  • Implement and manage project changes and interventions to deliver against emerging priorities and the Country Business Plan. Keep wider Embassy teams including the Joint Serious Organised Crime Platform (e.g. National Crime Agency, HM Revenue and Customs and Crown Prosecution Service) regularly informed about the project.

Essential on arrival:

  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • English and Bulgarian (C1 level or higher according to the *CEFR for languages).
  • Knowledge of the Bulgarian administration and interest in Bulgarian politics, especially in the field of security.
  • IT literacy, a good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and Power Point is essential.
  • Flexibility. Occasionally the position may require the job holder to work extended hours or work flexibly, sometimes at short notice; this may include some travel.
  • The ability to work effectively within a small team.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of the wider embassy structure, in accordance with embassy values, contributing to wider corporate life.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in an international/multilateral environment.
  • Previous administrative experience.
  • Project design, delivery and management skills.

This a full-time, 24-month contract position of 36 hours per week (net of lunch breaks). 

The successful candidate will receive a monthly salary of 2937 BGN/month gross. In addition, staff are entitled to a 13th month salary.

The job holder will be entitled to 25 days annual leave, calculated.

We offer free parking space in City Centre, upon availability.

Core skills training and mandatory trainings will be provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. All staff have a personal development plan and access to world class learning and development opportunities.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. Anyone with right of residence and employment in Bulgaria may apply, including all EU/EEA citizens and the family members of EU/EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Bulgaria. 

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Bulgarian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Bulgaria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
