Who are we? 

The British Embassy in Uzbekistan is part of the worldwide UK diplomatic network working on behalf of British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and is now seeking to recruit a creative and enthusiastic Public Diplomacy Officer to its Political and Public Diplomacy Section (PPDS).  

Main purpose of job: 

The successful candidate will work on a range of tasks aimed at strengthening UK-Uzbekistan relations. The main task will be leading on our digital diplomacy work and run the Embassy’s social media accounts. Specific tasks are likely to include planning, drafting, posting social media content on various platforms, designing, running and implementing specific social media campaigns, supporting British Diplomats and colleagues across other sections in promoting and amplifying the work of the Embassy.  The Officer will also be responsible for taking photographs/video and editing them, as well as monitoring and evaluating the development of our social media networks.

Over the course of time, the Officer might begin working at a more strategic level and be involved in other kinds of media engagement. The successful candidate may also be asked to support other elements of PPDS or Embassy activity (e.g. supporting preparations for high level visits). Some weekend or evening work, as well as occasional travel to the regions of Uzbekistan may be required, for which the successful candidate will receive time off in lieu.   

Roles and responsibilities: 

  • Lead on all digital communications for British Embassy Tashkent, across all platforms: Instagram, Facebook, X,  Telegram, and the Embassy’s website. Posting varied, accurate and engaging content on a regular (daily) basis, using a variety of communication techniques. This work includes drafting text for posts, preparing digital content (photos, videos, reel) and supporting other Embassy teams. The Officer will also support growth of the Ambassador’s social media presence.  
  • To lead in delivering public diplomacy campaigns for specific themes and UK priorities e.g. media freedom, 16 Day of Activism against GBV, Chevening scholarship scheme, etc.
  • Lead on planning and drafting social media content in advance. Considering the type of post, platforms to use for a particular message, and key dates around the year (e.g. International Women’s Day) to ensure regular online engagement with our audience. Anticipating opportunities to capitalise on the Embassy’s engagement on social media.
  • Be responsible for timely and correct responses to messages received through our social media channels.
  • Manage the Embassy’s website by updating necessary information and publishing key news.
  • Analysis of our digital communications: in collaboration with the Press and Public Affairs Officer, producing a monthly report which outlines key metrics of social media reach and engagement, with analysis and recommendations.

Our ideal Candidate shows:     

  • Fluency at C1 level in English, and either Uzbek or Russian (according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*), verbal and written, with excellent communications skills for creating compelling posts;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Media, Strategic Communications, Marketing, International Relations, or related field;
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in digital communications, social media management including Facebook, Instagram, X, Telegram. Knowledge of social media
    algorithms and best practices of audience engagement;
  • Experience of taking photos/videos using both professional camera and mobile phones;
  • Basic graphic design and video editing skills, experience of using relevant software;
  • Confidence to build and engage an effective network of contacts;
  • Confident in giving direction to colleagues in terms of communications, a collaborative approach to team working;
  • Attention to detail, strong organisational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritise;
  • Flexible, resilient under pressure, and decisive, with the ability to deliver quickly and to a high standard;
  • Understanding of current affairs/political environment/foreign policy, basic understanding of diplomacy.

Nice to have: 

  • Relevant experience within an embassy or an international organisation;
  • Experience of writing/drafting social media and media content;
  • Experience of translations from/to English-Uzbek-Russian;
  • Proficiency in tools such as Excel, Meta Business Suite, Hootsuite or similar analytics platforms.

Working patterns: This is a full-time position. The Embassy offers the opportunity of 1 day a week Working From Home.
