Main purpose of job:

Working as part of the Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment team, the Specialist will lead the execution, and contribute to the development of a programme of activities and customer engagements, across the targeted opportunity areas aligning with Scotland’s renewable energy transition in their market and as requested support Asia region or Global Lead Generation activity. The job holder will apply innovative thought to identify and match opportunities in Scotland with the targeted companies’ needs and proactively work with them to uncover or co-generate potential new inward investment projects and opportunities for international trade.

As the only SDI member of Staff in Korea you will be working closely both with the SDI team across Asia-Pacific, but also directly with colleagues in other departments in the British Embassy in Seoul, in particular with the Department for Business and Trade, on areas of common interest.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

Generate and engage with target companies by:

  • Identify and form trusted relationships
  • Ensuring a clear understanding of Scotland and its opportunity areas for inward investment and trade

Identify, and develop inward investment leads by:

  • Using an agreed, commercial opportunity led, approach for lead generation and customer engagement
  • Identifying the most appropriate set of individuals within target companies to network with.
  • Designing and executing appropriate engagement activities
  • Develop and deliver tailored propositions that position opportunities in Scotland for target companies
  • Prioritizing and responding as appropriate to leads made visible through reactive channels, such as Enquiries.

Promote and deliver trade opportunities by:

  • Proactively developing trade development opportunities for the Scottish Offshore Wind supply chain to export to South Korea by networking with developers, EPCs, trade associations, and other potential buyers and partners. This also includes attending industry events and promoting Scottish expertise in offshore wind.
  • Responding to inquiries from Scottish companies keen to explore opportunities, providing them with trade support to guide them through market access, cultural considerations, making introductions, and managing company visits and trade missions to South Korea.

Provide support and advice to:

  • Colleagues in qualifying enquiries to leads and on research activities, and to Global Business Development Specialists as project is transitioned into the Business Development Phase.
  • Colleagues in the Scotland based trade team as they prospect companies and get them ready to export to South Korea.
  • Internal stakeholders and partners within the British Embassy South Korea (in particular the Department for Business and Trade), sharing information and insights about Scotland priorities and opportunities for international investment and trade.

This role provides an opportunity for stretch by:

  • Taking a ‘strategic challenger’ approach with companies to identify projects which may enable deeper company working at an international level.
  • Working with colleagues to scope major investment opportunities.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

The jobholder will for delegated budgets be responsible for allocating, monitoring, and controlling resources within budget. The jobholder will also manage external resources required to execute on a project where typical project budgets will be around £20,000 for inward projects and £5000 for trade.

 

Skills:

  • Communication using various channels with a range of people and stake holders
  • Customer relationship management skills, with high levels of confidence and credibility in dealing with senior personnel
  • Diagnostic, strategic challenger, influencer and strong facilitation skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative and participate in and lead meetings alone or in support of more senior grades.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • IT literate and comfortable using Microsoft packages such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word

Experience:       

  • Working in a customer focused sales and or business development environment
  • Working with networks, partners and stakeholder.
  • Using past experience and precedent the Specialist will exercise discretion when required.

Language Requirements:

Fluency in Korean and business level English, both spoken and written.

Knowledge about renewable energy industry, in particular offshore wind in Korea & Scotland.

Accountability: Reports to Director of Investment Asia Pacific

Level of Accountability:

  • Development of productive networks of stakeholders and intermediaries and engagement across a range of existing and potential customers
  • Designing and delivering customer engagements

External accountability:

  • With networks and stakeholders
  • With existing and potential inward investment customers in Scotland and around the world, and to trade customers in Scotland and South Korea.

Global span of control: Working with colleagues and stakeholders in Scotland and globally.

Financial responsibility: Financial discipline for delegated project budgets

Key performance indicators:

  • Delivery of Inward Investment related to the lead generation phase of the customer journey that drives achievement of the business plan measures; and Trade KPIs for forecasted sales based on exports.
  • This role will be at least 80% customer facing.

Learning and development opportunities:

SDI provides a range of training opportunities in Inward Investment promotion skills including consultative selling, networking, communication and project management.

Successful candidate will be expected to complete mandatory online learning courses and encouraged to pursue other relevant training opportunities.

Additional formal learning to be agreed between successful applicant and Line Manager.

While some evening work and travel overseas (which might include weekends) and within Korea is required, we promote family-friendly flexible working opportunities, where operational and security needs allow.

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). However, occasional evening and weekend working may be required, for which time off in lieu is given. The British Embassy Seoul encourages flexible working and various flexible working arrangements are possible with line manager agreement, including working from home.
