Who are we? 

This is a unique opportunity for an individual to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Ukraine team.  The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has overall responsibility for promoting UK trade across the world and attracting foreign direct investment to the UK.  We are a specialised international economic government department with responsibility for negotiating international trade policy, supporting business, and delivering  an outward-looking trade diplomacy strategy.

DBT Ukraine at British Embassy Kyiv is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

Working closely with businesses across the UK and Ukraine, you will play a key role in delivering a quality service to a range of businesses looking to export to or invest in Ukraine in the defence and security sector.

Main purpose of job:

You will be working with colleagues in the UK – as well as a broad range of Departments and agencies within the Government of Ukraine – to grow UK business interest in this sector, and to continue to demonstrate the UK’s support to Ukraine.

You will be responsible for supporting large, set-piece events scheduled throughout the year in Ukraine, with the aim of facilitating business-to-business interaction in the defence and security equipment sector. Your role will include logistics planning and delivery, event management, liaison with the Government of Ukraine, and other administrative duties to be determined by the demands of specific events.

This will be a busy and rewarding role; there is huge business and government interest in defence and security industrial cooperation between the UK and Ukraine. You will play a direct role in supporting and deepening that cooperation, by facilitating better understanding of Government of Ukraine requirements in the security sector, and by facilitating strong and resilient businesses relationships between British and Ukrainian businesses.

Your objectives will include:

  1. Building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders across defence and security exports to secure buy-in for programme-related activity.
  2. Leading on logistical delivery of large-scale defence and security equipment events both in Ukraine and in the UK.
  3. Supporting the creation and delivery of a programme of activity to promote trade in security exports.
  4. Identifying opportunities for industrial production collaboration between the UK and Ukraine in the defence and security sector.

What will you be expected to achieve?

  • Build defence industrial collaboration and exports between the UK and Ukraine in the security sector.
  • Support cooperation in the defence exports sector by providing administrative and logistical support to key events.
  • Identify commercial opportunities for UK companies in the security sector, and proactively engage with these companies to facilitate greater access to these opportunities.
  • Regular engagement with security sector businesses operating in Ukraine to better understand commercial intelligence, as well as challenges faced by businesses – and planning campaigns to attempt to reduce these challenges.
  • Develop a strong network of UK and Ukrainian businesses, and within the Government of Ukraine, as well as with other relevant contacts in security sector.

Essential on arrival:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Ukrainian (C1 level or higher according to the *CEFR for languages)
  • Strong communication and influencing skills – the ability to represent a view and get others to buy-in.
  • Relationship-building and networking skills.
  • The ability to propose, initiate, and deliver projects independently, with demonstrable results.
  • A proven team-player, who is able and willing to provide support as necessary across the team’s portfolio
  • Commitment to strengthening the UK-Ukraine relationship, in International Trade.

Desirable:

  • Prior knowledge of, or experience of working on, the defence or security sectors.

This is a permanent contract position for 40 working hours per week including 1 hour per day for lunch.

The start date mentioned in the advert is just an expected start date. The appointment can start earlier or later depending on several factors.

The successful candidate will benefit from:

These include DBT International Trade Profession, sector knowledge-building courses, performance management and leadership courses, diversity, and inclusion.  Several civil service courses are mandatory for new entrants e.g data handling, security related courses.
  • Opportunity to manage some bilateral projects for which the person will have more direct responsibility.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance.
