Department for Business and Trade roles (DBT)

An Overview:

The British Embassy in Sweden is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Department for Business & Trade in the British Embassy(BE), Sweden is now looking for a Senior Investment Adviser whose primary purpose is to promote the UK as the destination of choice for investment from Sweden to the UK.

This is to be achieved through active market screening, sourcing, developing leads from new as well as current UK investors, collaboration and consultation with UK stakeholders, UK regions and Devolved Administrations. The job holder will also be required to project manage and deliver key events, as well as draft and contribute to high level briefings and other wider Embassy and UK Government Departments reporting requirements. The latter often within short deadlines. 

The role entails:

  • Delivery: Maintain and grow current investment pipeline, engage with stakeholders and project manage events/activities for the benefit of the DBT Sweden investment pipeline. Ensure client engagement is properly recorded in internal CRM system, drive investments into the UK, regular engagement with investment clients.
  • Strategy: Using all means available to successfully deliver inward investment projects. This includes cooperation with wider Embassy, UK based colleagues, key stakeholders, and policy teams for efficient account management. Mapping of sectors providing investment opportunities in the UK in accordance with the Industrial Strategy.
  • Communication: As required by the DBT Sweden team, build solid rapport with key clients in order to increase interest in information about UK market solutions, policy and regulatory changes.
  • Synergies: Linking investment strategies and clients with DBT HQ, wider Embassy teams, UK Regions & Devolved Administrations.
  • Personal: Demonstrate personal ambition for DBT’s Stockholm Investment Team including the ability to maximise resource, introduce innovative ideas and enhance capabilities leading to increased performance and effectiveness.
  • Flexibility: Deliver against targets whilst also supporting wider team targets. Flexibility to change sector portfolio depending on opportunities. Adopts to short delivery deadlines and change of focus (lead generation, investment meetings, event organisation and delivery, VIP visits and related briefing and reporting).

This job is for you if you are sociable, flexible, open-minded with a good understanding of Swedish industry and an eye for detail. With an appetite for investment discussions with Swedish corporates on senior management level, you also need to appreciate networking as well as internal administration. You will be expected to read up on and follow market developments within the sectors covered.

In this job, the jobholder will grow his/her network significantly and get an opportunity to work across government and industry via key decision makers (eg. giving you an opportunity to expand your professional network). The role will focus on outreach and contact with corporates, institutional investors, venture capital, and private equity.

The Stockholm Investment Team fosters an innovation culture to encourage new ways of working and a higher level of delivery.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Proficiency at C1 level in English and Swedish or above under the CEFR.
  • A degree in Business/Economics (or applicable subject), or has a minimum of 3 years Business management & development experience.
  • An understanding of international expansion.
  • Ability to build rapport at all levels with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Outstanding strategic thinking skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Full competency of Excel, Word, CRM tools and Microsoft Teams.
  • Knowledge of Swedish industry strengths.
  • Ability to run several key accounts and events at the same time.

Good to have:

  • Knowledge of UK industry strengths both on national and regional level.
  • Experience of inward investment cycles.
  • Understanding about Swedish industry strengths within institutional investments (pension funds and private equity), advanced engineering, tech, renewables, professional business services.
