Main purpose of job:

The Information Technology Systems Intern (ITSI) is a temporary three-month position between 15th of December 2024 to 15th of February 2025 within the Information Technology Systems Officer (ITSO) team of the British High Commission. 

This role will be focused on assisting the Information Technology Systems Officers (ITSOs) with several critical infrastructure projects during the above period. It is a great opportunity to learn about work not just in the FCDO but also the way IT can work in a government environment and engagement with multiple stakeholders (including our 170 staff), including telecommunication companies.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

  • Moving of physical IT equipment (docking station, monitors, etc) across various offices and desks.
  • Support Asset management system & recording of IT Equipment.
  • Assistance with telephone audits & contract renewal works.
  • Backing up on Server Rack cabling & re-cabling works.
  • Providing IT Troubleshooting and support for end users.
  • Rebuilding of laptops and desktops.
  • Office 365 account management for unclassified systems.
  • Scheduling assistance to ITSOs for induction of new staff & associated IT hardware

All the above duties will be done in coordination with the ITSOs – guidance and on the job, training will be provided in all cases. A more detailed learning plan will be provided to any successful candidate focusing on skills and information that will be taught through the internship.

Qualifications related to Information Technology are welcomed but not essential. More important is a demonstrable interest in customer services, being team player, particularly digital storytelling, and a passion to develop skills in this area

The below skills are the minimum required for the work involved.

  • Microsoft Office suite – preference on Word, Excel & Microsoft Teams
  • Good English language skills
  • Good communication skills

The below skills are optional. They will be taught during the course of the work if the candidate does not have them innately.

  • Advanced experience with Microsoft SharePoint & Teams
  • Good I.T. troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of Office 365 licensing & deployment models
  • Knowledge of Azure AD / Intune

Working Patterns:

Normal working hours are 37.5 hours per week: 8.00am to 4.30 pm from Monday to Friday with one hour lunch break in between.

Other information:

In addition to the duties which this job normally entails, you may from time to time be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary to meet the needs of the High Commission, including playing a part in the corporate life of the mission and supporting any crisis response.
