Main purpose of job: Taiwan is rising up the agenda across the UK government. Bilateral trade with Taiwan is worth £8.6 billion and growing, and Taiwan is our 5th largest partner in Asia-Pacific. UK government support to help British companies navigate new opportunities and existing relationships can be invaluable. We are seeking a Market Advisor for Export Support to join our team and lead the delivery of our economic growth agenda, with a focus on SME focused sectors including food and drink, consumer retail, healthcare, and education. The post holder will also facilitate introductions between SMEs and DBT Taipei colleagues who lead on energy, security, tech and financial services. You will be part of the Asia Pacific Export Support Service, International Markets (IM) team as the Market Advisor for Taiwan, joining a dynamic regional team of 23 focused on helping attract more of the UK’s 5.5 million SME businesses into Taiwan. In addition to these primary responsibilities, you’ll be a core member of Department of Business and Trade (DBT) Taipei. In this role you will lead proactive campaigns to build UK business interest in Taiwan and assist companies with a broad range of market entry enquiries. This job offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work in the high-performing Department of Business & Trade (DBT) team at the British Office Taipei, working with UK and Taiwan government in a high-profile bilingual environment. DBT’s role is to promote UK’s business interests worldwide, and the job holder will contribute to the UK’s prosperity by assisting UK businesses wishing to export to and/or establish a presence in Taiwan. Learning and development opportunities: The British Office Taipei and the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provides a range of training opportunities in core diplomatic and commercial skills, from networking and communication to project management. The British Office Taipei works closely with missions across the Asia-Pacific region to share experience and learning. Alongside a number of specific courses that must be completed upon arrival, the Office is supportive of learning and development. We offer five development days per year, and regular opportunities for learning and development delivered both within the mission and regionally in Asia. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals. All staff are required to take a role in the Office’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills. Working Patterns: The British Office supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This role allows for flexible working e.g. start and end times, working compressed hours, working remotely on one day a week, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management. This role requires flexibility to sometimes work outside of conditioned hours e.g. during high level visits and Office events. Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Office are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Taiwan employment law. Candidates must have the correct permit to work in Taiwan in order to apply. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. You must have or be able to obtain correct permit to work or work authorisation in Taiwan in order to apply. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
