Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the UK government department charged with promoting and financing international trade and development, and championing free trade. In Brazil, DBT operates within the British Embassy in Brasília, and Consulates in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Recife, with a team who work primarily through a number of sector specific export promotion campaigns.

This is a brilliant opportunity to work on one of the most important export campaigns for UK Government in Brazil. You will work as part of UK Defence and Security Exports (UKDSE), which is responsible for assisting UK Defence, Security and Cyber Security industries in their efforts to export. UKDSE works to build strong relationships with overseas industry, governments, and armed forces, providing specialist export advice and practical assistance to British companies and working closely with UK and Brazil government departments.
This is an ideal position for someone with the ability to work collaboratively with an international team. The job will require the successful candidate to take responsibility for delivering both quickly and to a high standard.

Roles and responsibilities:

The successful candidate will provide general assistance to the sector team, which includes:

  • Respond to enquiries from Brazilian and UK companies in Brazil;
  • Assistance in the production of market analysis, briefings, research, and small translations related to companies and business/economic topics;
  • Assistance in the organisation of events such as workshops, trade missions, receptions, seminars, and VIP visits (travel bookings, visiting programmes, preparation of welcome packs, etc.);
  • Regularly update client relationship system (Data Hub) and keep internal databases updated;
  • Keep the area’s documents, systems, and spreadsheets organised;
  • Ad hoc duties as necessary, including updating spreadsheets with customers and project information;
  • Support the teams as required (setting up and accompanying meetings, follow-ups, reports, updating contacts, briefings, etc.).

Essential on arrival: 

  • The successful candidate should be a 2nd or 3rd-year student in Administration, Economics, International Relations, or other related disciplines.
  • He/she must have excellent written and oral communication skills in both Portuguese and English,
  • Strong organisational, proactiveness, and team-working skills.

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Portuguese

Level of language required:   Fluent

Desirable: 

  • Academic experience with defence and security will be highly appreciated.
  • Very good command of Microsoft Office is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish at a Intermediate Level.

Working patterns:

This is a part time job (30 hours a week) working hours to be agreed upon.
Currently, work is Hybrid but mostly (3 days a week) presential. The successful candidate will be expected to go into the Consulate in Rio de Janeiro as the main location to work from.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.   The FCDO operates an agile workforce.
