Context:

This position is located in the French Translation Unit with the Translation Services (TRS), which is part of the Governing Bodies Secretariat (GBS).

The Governing Bodies Secretariat (GBS) bears main responsibility for the preparation and coordination of IOM’s annual governing body meetings, including sessions of the Council, Standing Committee on Programmes and Finance, International Dialogue on Migration and related informal consultations.

The Translation Services (TRS), consisting of the French Translation Unit (FTU) and the Spanish Translation Unit (SPTU), are responsible for providing translation services into French and Spanish. It is also responsible for processing, internally and externally, translation requests received from HQ departments and divisions, administrative centres and field offices and coordinating, on an ad-hoc basis, the translation of IOM documents into English and other UN official languages, as well as non-UN languages, as required.

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the French Translation Unit, the Senior Translator (French) will be accountable and responsible for providing translation and revision services covering a broad range of documents and subjects dealt with by the Organization.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Revise translations dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the Organization produced by staff and external translators, ensuring consistency and coherence with in-house standards.
  2. Translate in self-revision texts on the wide range of technical subject areas dealt with by the Organization, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency, as well as administrative, financial or legal documents, which may be particularly sensitive or complex.
  3. Edit French translations as and when required, in order to ensure consistency with IOM terminology and stylistic conventions.
  4. Guide and train translators (staff and external collaborators) with a view to refining their skills and coordinate some translation work carried out as a team.
  5. Keep abreast of developments in the area of CATT (computer-assisted translation and terminology) tools, make full use of them and actively contribute to their utilization.
  6. Carry out linguistic research and create glossaries and other reference tools to feed into theUnit’s multilingual terminology databases.
  7. Perform other duties as required.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Translation or a related field from an accredited academic institution with a minimum of seven years of experience in translation; or,
  • University degree from the above fields with nine years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of experience in translation, self-revision and revision is required.
  • At least three years of experience in the United Nations Common System is desirable.
  • Experience in revision would be an asset.
  • Proven experience in the use of standard computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is required.

Skills

  • Demonstrated solid drafting, writing, and analytical skills in French;
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of accuracy, consistency, and faithfulness to the spirit, style, and nuances of the original text;
  • Good knowledge and understanding of a technical or administrative field and of migration-related terminology;
  • Ability to keep abreast of the evolving linguistic specificities of the French language and apply them accordingly.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For all applicants, perfect command of French (mother tongue), excellent knowledge of English, and perfect understanding of Spanish (passive) is required. Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, and Russian) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
