This project aims to understand the processes controlling key tipping points (TPs) associated with the oceans and ice sheets and assess their potential impacts on society and the global Earth system. As part of the project, you will investigate the stability regimes of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet by conducting numerical simulations with ice-sheet models. You will develop early warning indicators for the stability regimes and test their efficiency. You will undertake, with appropriate support and guidance, individual and collaborative quantitative and qualitative research projects, resulting in excellent outputs of sufficient volume, quality, and impact that are internationally excellent in originality, significance and rigour to meet the terms of the next Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise. The role is a fixed-term role of 3 years.Further information about the role is available in the .ABOUT THE TEAMAffiliated with Northumbria University, you will work with Dr. Sainan Sun (on ice-sheet modelling) and Prof. Hilmar Gudmundsson (on Early Warning indicators). This Research Project is being delivered within the Geography and Environmental Sciences Department within the research team . The researchers in the team work together to predict global sea level changes, and in particular the sea level contribution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet by developing and running numerical ice and ocean models. Researchers are developing ice sheet models and new ice-ocean model configurations which underpin research activities at several UK Universities and worldwide.ABOUT YOUApplicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline (e.g. physics, mathematics, glaciology, earth sciences) and have knowledge in related fields such as ice-sheet modelling, geodynamics or continuum mechanics.Further information about the requirements of the role is available in the .If you would like an informal discussion about the role, please contact Dr. Sainan Sun .To apply for this vacancy please click ‘Apply Now’.
