We invite applications from industry or outstanding early career researchers with industry experience for an open-ended Assistant Professorship (Teaching and Scholarship) position in Mechanical Engineering.We are looking for candidates with a focus on engineering design and manufacture whose real-world experience will complement our existing expertise to teach Mechanical Engineering to undergraduate and postgraduate students via lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes and project supervision.Detailed DescriptionWe are looking for a talented and highly motivated individual to join our teaching and learning activities in the Mechanical Engineering discipline of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS).The role holder will be expected to lead and contribute to the delivery and assessment of a number of undergraduate, and postgraduate taught courses relevant to Mechanical Engineering. Teaching is likely to cover a range of topics such as workshop practice, product engineering, process planning, design methods, manufacturing techniques. Teaching will involve the delivery of lectures, tutorials, and practical classes and may involve organisation of external expert speakers and field trips (e.g. to industry). It will be expected that the role holder will reflect on the delivery of courses and enhance and develop courses based on student feedback. Supervision of desk and lab-based research project students will also be required. The successful candidate will also be a personal tutor to undergraduate, and postgraduate taught students.The role holder will engage in scholarship as required to support teaching activities and continually update knowledge, reporting on improvements internally and externally when appropriate e.g. at Engineering Education conferences.The successful applicant will be based in Edinburgh in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the role will require you to collaborate with colleagues both locally and at our overseas campuses in Dubai and Malaysia.Whilst this is a role with a significant amount of responsibility you will have a network that will help support your career development. For those from a non-academic background we will provide mentorship to develop your academic skills.Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delivery of taught content of the mechanical engineering programme (lectures, tutorials, workshops and laboratories) as directed by the Global Head of the Mechanical Engineering Discipline, and this may include topics across all mechanical engineering subjects as well as the job holder’s specialist area.
  • Act as personal tutor to assigned tutees.
  • Supporting undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and other relevant areas by carrying out assessment and moderation of coursework and examination marking as required.
  • Further developing existing learning materials in Mechanical Engineering related subjects. This may include, but is not limited to, course notes, video podcasts and course assessments.
  • Liaising with relevant academic staff across EPS and carrying out discipline-related administrative tasks as required.

Education, Qualifications & ExperienceEssential Criteria

  • A good first degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Industrial experience and/or research experience in Design and Manufacture to enhance learning experience across UG and PG programmes.
  • Ability to communicate Design and Manufacture concepts clearly to various audience profiles.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, team working and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

Desirable Criteria

  • Chartered Engineer and Member of the IMechE – or equivalent engineering institution.
  • Experience of developing/delivering training/teaching material.
  • Commitment to adopting principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • A higher degree (MSc/PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent vocational/industrial experience.
  • A Postgraduate certificate in teaching in higher education.
