The Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Israeli Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will be appointed to either the Department of Political Science or the Department of Sociology (51%) dependent upon their area of expertise, and hold a minority appointment in the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies (49%).
In addition, the successful candidate is also eligible to be named the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Chair in Israeli Studies. This endowed chair appointment would be for a five-year term and is renewable following a favourable review.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in in any social science discipline or related fields, with a research and teaching portfolio with a substantial focus on modern Israel and a scholarly connection to the field of Jewish Studies broadly defined. They must demonstrate an exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching as well as relevant experience in research supervision. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing strengths with proven ability to cross disciplinary boundaries. Candidates will have an established international reputation and be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level in areas pertaining to the study of Israel.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by the following: sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant venues, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades for innovative work, and any noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of their discipline inclusive of the study of Israel, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high international standing.
The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the Faculty of Arts & Science’s undergraduate and graduate education in the study of Israel. Evidence of excellence in teaching and experience in research supervision will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, including a statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and sample course materials submitted as part of the application.
