King’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) headed by Professor Anita Grigoriadis (interim) is the academic arm of King’s Health Partners’ Comprehensive Cancer Centre (KHP CCC), one of the leading cancer centres in Europe. KHP CCC brings together world-class clinical services, delivered by our NHS partners, research and education for the benefit of cancer patients in south-east London and beyond. Research at the CCC has a strong and broad base of funding, including strategic investments such as the King’s partnership in the Cancer Research UK City of London Centre (CRUK CoL), CRUK RadNet, the KHP Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) and Breast Cancer Now Research Unit, alongside major research programmes delivered in partnership with colleagues in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine (e.g. School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences, School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences) and beyond.Our Research priorities

  • Early detection and treatment of cancer including recurrence after treatment
  • Cancer immunology and immunotherapy
  • Enhancing the knowledge transfer between solid tumour and haematological oncology disciplines
  • Integrative multimodality analysis (including machine learning) for precision medicine

We are committed to training future researchers and currently have over 80 students studying for a PhD in the Centre. We also run a very successful MRes in Translational Cancer Medicine.King’s Health Partners Haematology brings together haematology clinical services, alongside clinically focused research led by world-renowned academics. We ensure our expertise and knowledge is shared globally through our education and training programme.The King’s College Hospital (KCH) Department of Haematological Medicine is a leading centre for the care of patients with blood disorders, and provides specialist diagnostic investigations and treatments for a wide range of blood, bone marrow and spleen disorders. As one of the largest centres for haemoglobin disorders in the UK, KCH provides specialist day unit, outpatient and inpatient services to diagnose and treat sickle cell and thalassaemia. The clinical service also offers specialist treatment for all types of anaemia, platelet disorders, polycythaemia (high red cell count), iron metabolism disorders such as haemochromatosis (iron overload) and abnormal white cell count, and offers specialist transfusions advice for pregnant women, patients with special requirements and patients who refuse blood products. Further information on King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s clinical services can be found here.About the RoleWe wish to appoint an outstanding individual as Clinical Professor in Haematology and Head of the Department of Haematology within the Comprehensive Cancer Centre, School of Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences. We are especially interested in individuals with an academic track record and interest in either haemato-oncology, stem cell transplantation, advanced therapies (either oncological or non-oncological) or patient stratification. In addition to pursuing their own state-of-the-art programme, the postholder will provide strategic leadership for academic haematology including research, education and mentorship of early career clinical and non-clinical scientists. The role as Head of Section is normally held for five years and is renewable. It would be possible to consider a phased move into the academic leadership role for individuals who would like to first take some time to establish their research programme at King’s. Current research interests in the Section include Leukaemia & Myeloma, Lymphoma, Bone Marrow Failure & Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Clonal Haematopoiesis, Allogeneic Stem cell Transplantation, Molecular Haematology, Sickle cell disease and Venous Thrombosis.Responsibilities of Head of Department of Haematology:The Head of Department of Haematology is responsible for academic, strategic and operational leadership within the Department; and will support the Joint Heads of School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences in ensuring the School executes excellence across all its activities. The role holder is expected:

  • To align the Department’s strategic objectives with those of the Faculty, with responsibility for the delivery of these; to optimise the School’s and Faculty’s performance and ongoing sustainability
  • To ensure the Department contributes to the School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences’ ambition to excel in education, research, international and knowledge transfer activities, encouraging and fostering collaboration and ensuring consistency of practice and process
  • To represent the Department of Haematology and School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences’ interests in the development of Faculty and university policy, and to be responsible for the implementation of Faculty and university policy within the Department
  • To performance manage staff in the Department
  • To foster a stimulating, innovative and inclusive cultural environment across the Department enabling students and staff to thrive and develop
