The Aldersgate Group carries out research across climate change and environment policy, publishes policy reports, holds roundtables and high-profile public events, works closely with decision-makers and is active across social and mainstream media.

THE ROLE

The Group is looking to hire a capable, motivated and enthusiastic Communications and Events Officer. This role is responsible for administering, coordinating and supporting activities across our Communications function, and will support the organisation in growing its influence and membership. The successful applicant will play a key role in the work of the External Affairs team, as well as supporting the wider governance and administration responsibilities of the Secretariat.

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional candidate who wants to bring people together to tell compelling stories about the pragmatic solutions to the climate and nature mission. The Communications and Events officer will be central to ensuring Aldersgate Group’s message is received, and we remain a trusted and influential voice in the debate. The successful candidate will work as part of a supportive and engaged team, liaising closely with Aldersgate Group members. You will help to further diversify our creative communications and drive our events programme. This role is for someone who is motivated by purpose and excited by the opportunity to see their work contribute to positive change.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose of role

The Secretariat team is nine strong, with roles covering policy development, external affairs and operations. The Communications and Events Officer will report to the External Affairs Manager, who overseas activity across both our public affairs and communications functions. Aldersgate Group is refreshing the way we communicate our work, and the Communications and Events Officer will be central to this expansion of activity in both social and mainstream media.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of communications, media engagement, events and member engagement activity to raise Aldersgate Group’s profile with key audiences.
  • Monitor and report on relevant news and sector developments to identify opportunities for proactive media outreach, social media development and communications planning,
  • Create, manage and evaluate engaging written and digital content across the Aldersgate Group’s social media channels, newsletters, and website.
  • Support media engagement by preparing press materials, maintaining journalist contacts and helping build relationships with key media stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and support the logistical delivery of our programme of in-person and virtual events, including member meetings, webinars, report launches and high-profile external meetings.
  • Maintain accurate CRM records and support regular communications with members and stakeholders to strengthen engagement and retention.

The Communication and Events Officer will also support cross-organisational work to help manage relationships with Aldersgate Group members, support member recruitment and retention, and handle administrative tasks and information requests.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential criteria:

  • A broad understanding of how to interact with the media, to secure coverage.
  • Experience of producing impactful social media content, across platforms like LinkedIn, X, and Bluesky.
  • Experience of coordinating online and in-person events.
  • An ability to work proactively and independently.
  • Excellent written, oral and creative skills, with a high attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to work with people in senior positions.
  • An ability to multi-task and prioritise projects.
  • Core values aligned to those of the Aldersgate Group, a passion for environmental issues and a commitment to our mission.

Desirable experience criteria:

  • Managing organisational social media accounts across multiple platforms.
  • Using digital analytics tools and platform dashboards (Google Analytics) to track performance and inform decisions.
  • Website administration using Content Management Systems, including WordPress.
  • An understanding of the private sector and the role it can play in the transition to a net zero, nature positive economy.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary: £33,949 – £39,253 per annum, dependent upon experience

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Monday – Friday, full time, 37.5 hours per week (we are happy to discuss flexible working requests such as compressed or part time hours)

Location: Hybrid, with office located in Waterloo, Central London (Zone 1). We have core team days in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Office attendance on other days is subject to personal preference and business needs.

Leave: 30 days per annum (including three compulsory days between Christmas and New Year), plus bank holidays.
