Community Ecologist

Devon Wildlife Trust

Can you excite others about our natural environment, and help guide their enthusiasm and
interest towards helping improve our collective knowledge of Devon’s biodiversity?

Could your ecological skills now help to train and upskill a broad range of individuals and
groups, generating high quality species and habitat data, and delivering exciting conservation
outcomes?

Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) is Devon’s leading wildlife conservation charity, with over 36,000
members, 350 regular volunteers, 100 staff and 63 nature reserves. We are one of the larger
locally based organisations that collectively make up The Wildlife Trusts. DWT has pioneered
the reintroduction of beavers in England and the restoration of internationally rare habitats
like Culm Grassland.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in ecology from within the conservation or
ecological consultancy sector. Having developed a range of survey skills, and gained relevant
protected species licences within previous roles, you will use these to develop and deliver
targeted biodiversity monitoring within the county.

Your role will be split across specific projects within Devon, which will change over time.
Currently these include Saving Devon’s Treescapes, the County Wildlife Site survey program and
species reintroduction initiatives. For Saving Devon Treescapes, you will lead community
science surveys for brown hairstreak and other indicator species within our hedgerows and small
copses. You will build capacity within volunteer groups to support the County Wildlife Site
survey program and increase access onto sites requiring survey. DWT is at the forefront of
species recovery, and you will support community science monitoring of species releases, such
as pine martens.

You will be a great communicator, able to share your knowledge and train others at appropriate
levels, recruit volunteers and create community science micro projects, whilst also setting up
longer term structured monitoring initiatives.

In return for your hard work and dedication you’ll enjoy a wide range of benefits including:

  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (increasing to 28 days after 5 years’ service)
  • Agile working arrangements including home working
  • Flexitime system
  • Salary progression (subject to satisfactory performance)
  • Contributory pension scheme (conditions apply)
  • Death in Service cover
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Training and development opportunities

This is a full-time, permanent post contractually located at Cricklepit Mill, Exeter.

Interviews are being held on Wednesday 16 August.

We welcome candidates of all backgrounds and abilities who meet the essential criteria for this
role. We are an inclusive organisation that is seeking to involve more diverse audiences in our
work.
