About the Project

The BayBatt Young Investigator Group (Dr. Wang) at the Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt, University of Bayreuth) is offering the following position, starting in December 2024 or soon thereafter:

PhD Student

Topic: Development of layered cathode materials for Na-ion batteries

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student (f/m/d) to join our research group at the chair of Inorganic Active Materials for Electrochemical Energy Storage (Prof. Dr. Matteo Bianchini) in the rapidly advancing field of Na-ion batteries. The focus of this position is the development of novel cathode materials with an emphasis on improving capacity through the manipulation of anionic redox reactions via compositional design and morphology optimization.

Key Objectives:

  • Exploration of synthesis routes: soft chemistry routes, electrochemical and solid-state reactions.
  • Material characterization and evaluation of electrochemical performance using prototype cells.
  • Investigate long-term stability and energy efficiency using deep structural, electrochemical, and spectroscopy characterizations.
  • Collaborate with leading experts in spectroscopy simulation and computational modeling.

What we offer:

  • A position for three years with salary grade TV-L E13, 50 %.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment for synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical testing.
  • Access to modern advanced characterization tools at large-scale scientific facilities.
  • Comprehensive training in battery materials research, including synthesis, structural analysis, and electrochemical evaluation.
  • A unique research and qualification opportunity within a diverse and motivated team of scientists that value interdisciplinary research.
  • A stimulating scientific environment with sparring partners to develop a career in battery science or engineering.
  • A family-friendly working environment with flexible working hours and opportunities for professional and personal development.

Your profile:

  • M. Sc. in inorganic/physical chemistry, material science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of batteries and electrochemistry is beneficial.
  • Fluency in English reading, writing, and speaking/presenting.
  • Very good communication and teamwork skills.
