Wales’s Designated Landscapes (National Parks and National Landscapes) are special and unique places, where landscape and wildlife are managed by the farmers and other landowners. National Park purposes, which are to conserve and enhance the Park’s wildlife, natural beauty and cultural heritage and to promote opportunities for understanding and enjoying the Park’s special qualities, can be achieved only by supporting the farmers and communities who work within them and the wider local economy. Ffermio Bro: Farming in Designated Landscapes, is an agri-environment programme entering its second year to help achieve this in Wales’s Designated Landscapes including the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. Launched in April 2025, it is designed to inform the collaborative elements of the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Farming Scheme and is administered across the Designated Landscapes by Rural Payments Wales.
With overall objectives and themes common to all Designated Landscapes, the Ffermio Bro Programme is designed specifically for each Designated Landscape to reflect local priorities and opportunities. Working from Programme-specific guidance for the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, funding will support projects proposed by farmers and clusters of farmers working towards shared objectives for nature recovery, biodiversity conservation and the resilience of ecosystems. Projects will be sought that support the nature mission priorities identified in the Management Plan for the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, the Park’s Nature Recovery Action Plan, and amendments thereof. A range of activities will therefore be eligible for funding that support nature recovery and biodiversity across the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, contributing towards achieving resilient ecosystems and the benefits these provide. Projects will be approved directly by the Project Officer or by the Local Assessment Panel appointed by the National Park Authority.
The job holder will be based at Brecon Beacons National Park Authority HQ and will travel widely across this National Park on a regular basis as part of this role. A pool car will be available for work-related duties. Budget management skills will be required.
The post is funded by Welsh Government and will be dependent on the availability of funding.
Like similar roles in Wales’s other Designated Landscapes, the Ffermio Bro Project Officer will work alongside the current Ffermio Bro Project Officer. They will administer and coordinate the projects, engagement and advice, ensuring that farmers and other landowners can access the right funding, supporting them through the application process and monitoring delivery of activities. The post holder will be supported by other colleagues as required. Designed to encourage and facilitate collaboration and clusters, the role will encourage and facilitate group work including encouraging reluctant parties.
This role is the cornerstone of the Programme in this National Park and requires excellent knowledge of farming, conservation, budgetary control, project management and teamwork to connect the agricultural and land management community to the funding available and to the nature conservation community. For this Programme, the role will help co-ordinate the Brecon Beacon National Park Authority’s farmer and landowner engagement. The work requires regular farm-based work within the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, working with farmers, other landowners and Brecon Beacons National Park Authority staff. The role is strongly team-based.
